Breech Plug modification for 209x45
« on: December 23, 2003, 02:33:52 PM »
I was looking at the conversion and thought the price was a bit steep for something that could or could not fix my accuracy problems. I have posted in other topics about all the bullets that I have tried and the powder. I drilled out my breech plug and reamed it to fit a 25acp case with a regular small pistol primer.  It was raining so I only got 3 shots off before I figured that it had worked. I was lucky to keep a powerbelt within 10" of bullseye at 90yards. Two were power belts and shooting off hand at about 80 they were within 1.5" and the xtp was not further than 1" away from the power belts. Tomorrow I will try it out will several different loads AGAIN and let people know what I found out. If you want to modify the plug and use stock cases use the 25acp. No case shortening and the primer had plenty to set it off.  maybe the encore will group afterall :-)

That sounds promising.  The only disadvantage I can see to the .25 ACP is case wall thickness is a little thin.

Have you still got your QLA on the barrel?

Oops, meant to ask if you are using the factory extractor with that case or did you just remove it?

But then, a portion of the 209 primer sticks out and away from the
breech plug. Is its wall really any thicker than that of the .25 ACP
case?
We need to change our politicians
like we do dirty diapers.............
for the same reason.

I had thought about the wall thickness and the pressure is not even great enough to expand the case to the point that removing the fired case is difficult. Actually the reamer was big enough for a sized case to slide in but a fired case from a 25 acp pistol would not fit. Therefore the 25acp pistol exerts more pressure than the muzzleloader does to the case. I do have some blowback around the case. I had removed the extractor long ago because the ones from t/c are prone to breaking easily. The omega has the same breech plug but lacks the extractor and my primers always pull out easily without the extractor installed. Figure t/c did not need them and carried that thinking into the design of the omega.

Hmm, we've got to figure out how to stop that blowback around the case!   :-)

Well I went out and did some shooting today. I really like how the powerbelts load compared to the sabots. Even with the QLA the sabots are extremely difficult to load after the first shot. The powerbelts had been all over the place before but now at 90 yards they were grouping. It was snowing and blowing but I got 5 rounds in a rectangle about 4" wide and 2 inches tall. That is the best it has ever shot. The sabots shot fairly well but I am limited on the dead centers so I did not shoot them because if I sighted it in I would not have any ammo for hunting. The powerbelts are going to the woods with me this weekend. The groups are not great but I am running out of time and feel confident that I can keep the bullet in the kill zone. This spring when the weather is a bit more pleasant I will play with charges and different rounds to see if I can get it to shoot better. I am still wondering about sending the barrel to T/C to look at it and see what results they get with a 209. Anybody interested in the 25 conversion let me know, I can send you what I did.
Thanks
