suggested deer load for Savage 340 30/30 bolt action
« on: December 22, 2003, 11:07:54 AM »
A friend has a Savage mdl 340 clip fed bolt action 30/30.He needs to do some nuisance deer control.Being clip fed, this piece can use spitzers.
Any suggested loads-and their effective range?
Thanks.

We have 2 of these rifles, and use  150g Winchester pointed power points, or 125g Remington pointed soft points. With the 150's I use 36g of IMR4064. With the 125's I use 37.5g of H335. The 150's are travelling at 2360 fps and the 125's at 2570. I have shot quite a few whitetails with the 150g load and my wife has shot a few with the 125's. All have been quick clean kills. We have also loaded Hornady 110g psp ahead of 33g of IMR4198, they  travelled at 2800 fps. We haven't shot anything but paper with these. I have loaded hotter than this, but decided for safety sake to cut back, after all, it's my wife who shoots these rifles. If you use these loads please start lower and work up.

At what ranges did you take the deer?-my friend needs to reach out to ~150 yards.
Have you ever tried W748 as a propellant? In lever action 30/30s I've used this[32.0gr]with 170gr projectiles to duplicate factory loads.W748 meters well.

My wife took 1 whitetail at 200 and another at 225 yards with the 150g bullets. She shot 2 nice fat does with the 125's at 75 and 125 yards. All where very quick kills. I took a nice buck at 175 yards with the 150g bullet and he dropped on the spot. Most of the whitetails I shoot are very close, because I still hunt with this rifle and shots beyond 50 yards are seldom. Some say you can push the speed a little in these rifles, and if you want to try go with H335 and the Winchester 150g pointed soft point, or 150g silver tip. You have to watch how pointed the bullets are because the really pointed bullets are too long for the clip. I tried the Nosler Balistic tip and found them too long. Using H335, I have pushed the 150's faster than I do now, but you have to watch for pressure, and brass life is shorter. I have not tried 748, and have not shot the 170g bullet for over 25 years, the 150's work so well why would I change. I do use a 175g bullet in my 8x57 though. Good luck and happy hunting.

Here's my favorite load for the same rifle. A 130gr Hornady Interlock SSP- single shot pistol bullet over 34gr's of AA2460 loaded into Winchester brass and CCI large rifle primers. Highly accurate and recoils like a .22 WMR. I like the 130's length, they load and feed well and are highly accurate.
Well, it seemed like a good idea at the time....ES
