Powder horns were used to prime cannons also. Nice work.

very nice, How much work goes into making a complete one ?

well, if i have the 'raw' one with hair and stuff inside~about 10hrs, polish ones about 6-7hrs.......i don't care much for TV, and only get on the computer to check stuff and then off~ so i like to tinker!

thanks guy for the nice compliments......makes me feel good, i plan to make a 'cannon horn' someday. they had a special spout, with a 'handle' of sorts..........

Concerning a cannon horn.
Would pouring powder out of a horn into a vent be close to the same as pouring out of a powder can into your mortar? :o
Just thinking.

They did it way back when because that's what they had to work with. It is most definitely not something that we would do today.

Depending on how much powder you wanted and how big the conical cap was, you could pour into the cap and dump the cap into the vent.  Guess it also depends on how close the enemy is.   ;D

It's a treat to see your horns, kaintuck; I admire your engraving skills.
RIP John. While on vacation July 4th 2013 in northern Wisconsin, he was ATVing with family and pulled ahead of everyone and took off at break-neck speed without a helmet. He lost control.....hit a tree....and the tree won.  He died instantly.

I believe priming horns were smaller and  had a valve in them, to eliminate flashback

Is the eye/finger faster than the valve/flash?

Or if you had a set up like the fourth one from the top with the smaller one with it. You could fill the small one like a measure and pour from that.

The HAND is definately faster than the flash; but ONLY right after the flash ...   :o

I would never trust any mechanical valve to be tight enough to stand the pressure and flames from an ignited priming powder
