who can tell us about the 405 winchester, and or wildcats on that case?
i see that some GNR calibers are on the 405win case. what format are they usable in? contender, encore? how would these compare to other similar wildcats? like the jdj's, or cat's from the 225win, 444marlin, or whatever?

Let me start this by saying... :money:

I've got a SSK 405Win in a Contender. For all the ney sayers, check your case head size in front of the rim. All the 444 Marlin and associated wildcats have larger head diameters and require lower pressures than the 405Win. Hornady loads factory 405Win to 42,000psi MAX. I got this figure from 2 ballisticians at Hornady. The gun is amazingly accurate. Recoils like NOBODY'S business! BUT is safe.

I've owned one of the GNR cartridges. I'd like a longer neck! In calibers the size Gary uses the 405 case his neck lengths aren't enough. If you have a cannelure you often have to seat past that point to get the bullet to grip properly. BIG MINUS! I'd like to see someone develop a cartridge line off the 405Win, with a 1 to 1 1/2 caliber neck length. I think these would be really nice. The 405 case is a good base. Gary has a good idea. I feel he "improved" the cartridge to much though.

Going to the JDJ line. JD did everything right! Enough neck, enough freebore so people don't jam the bullet into the lands, good strong cases which he based his cartridge line on! I own a 257JDJ, 270JDJ, 375JDJ all rifle length. I had a 6.5JDJ and a 358JDJ pistol barrel. BOTH shot lights out, usually .5MOA. Missed 3 deer in one season with the 6.5JDJD! Had to be the barrel... :oops: so I sold it. Don't remember why the 358JDJ was sold... boy I wish I had that one back!!! Just understand, SSK Industries has done a lot of research and knows what is safe in your SSK barrel. You just cannot go wrong if you follow directions. They are as much as you can get SAFELY!!!!

If I read what I think I read on this forum the other day, Midway is getting some FACTORY Contender barrels in .405 Win; therefore, the factory thinks the cartridge is safe. The .30-40 Krag and the .405 Win share the same case head. The Krag is loaded to around 40,000 CUP, so I'd say that's your "wildcat" with a 1.5 cal case neck, or a .30-40 imp maybe. I know some say this isn't safe in the Contender, but the factory chambering in .405 Win suggests maybe this isn't the case. Anyhow, I sure do like my .30-40 Krag barrels and have been shooting them for years now with no problems (other than some dead deer that they gave some problems). I do stay at or under listed maximum loads, of course.

The only 405Win I saw at Midway was the Encore barrel.

I have a 30-40 Krag barrel in a Contender too, very nice shooter. Midway does offer the 30-40Krag Contender barrels (From VVCG's I think).

Fox Ridge is offering the 375JDJ for the Contender and Encore this year. As I stated before, that chambering has a larger head diameter. JD told me his 375JDJ doesn't exceed 42,500 psi MAX.

Note the difference though. Most manuals list average PSI. Max (or Peak) pressure can sometimes run an additional 5-10K PSI. That can be trouble with a Contender frame. Over a long time with loads that guys like to run "HOT" you stretch the frame. That is the reason TC came out with the G2. Note the metal band around the top rim of the frame. This is not to advocate running hot in the G2 because of the additional metal. You can blow a barrel too, if you want to get nuts. When good guys that care about their craft, like JD Jones, use quality equipment, like the 43PBL, they aren't guessing what MAX is... they know! JD has a couple frames with 5K+ rounds through them. TC trusts JD to test and evaluate their new products. Like when they developed the Encore and G2. Does Mike Bellm get that kind of preferential treatment from TC? (NO!) Every manual out there uses JD's load data. Not their own. I called JD once and asked about a particular bullet for one of his chamberings. He hadn't done any work with it at that time. About a month later he had and I got an email with the new data! Nuff said I reckon.

My mistake about the Encore/Contender barrels from Midway; I was working from memory of what I thought I read and had not looked at the Midway site. Thanks for correcting me - I did not mean to mislead anyone.

If you find a JD Jones chambering, you can get data from them. I've sent $$ and had him send data to me for all of my barrels I've bought second hand. The 6.5JDJ and 375JDJ data in Nosler, Hornady, Speer, and Hodgdon manuals are all straight from JD.
