Finally shot new 45LC Classic
« on: March 26, 2011, 02:16:06 PM »
I have had my new Classic Carbine in 45LC for a couple of weeks and finally got to shoot it. Used some borrowed cowboy hand loads. Shooting at a buffalo silhouette at 100 yards, offhand, I hit 11 out of 12. That target is about 4'x3.5'. i was amazed to hit so well with the open sights set as they came and moderate loads. I don't do much pinpoint target work. In cowboy action, a hit is a hit.
Beautiful gun and a great shooter. With it and my 45-70 Handi, I am set for side matches. :D

Got mine from cdnn for $229 plus tax and ffl.  I saw some hard to believe prices at gun show today. I laughed a lot.

Crazy high price.  Glad you asked at the lower mark.  Hope he doesn't sell any but know there are folks out there that are not in the know who will shell out that price and gladly walk away.

Good shooting BJ.  I too shot my 45 Colt Classic today (in another post) through a 24" x 36" drawing at 100 yards.  I was glad to hear ALL of the reloads hit the paper with open sights as I absolutely suck shooting off hand while standing.

I had to work the sights a lot as it was WAY HIGH off the target out of the box and target right, so I dropped the rear sight height all the way to the bottom notch and drifted the rear sight to the left a tad and was happy to see shots landing near bullseye from the bench.

The .45Colt H&R will shoot easy 2" at 100 and even less with some work. When I started with mine I was hoping 2"@ 60yrds but found and have shot it at less than 1" with the 6x Burris mine is able to do that most of the time...it's me that is the problem usually. Kurt

I don't even own a scope, although I have numerous rifles. I have tried scopes and can't seem to see through them enough to hit anything. I stick to iron sights, really like semi-buckhorns. I can shoot pretty tight groups if I use some sort of rest. One thing I like about cowboy action shooting is that accuracy counts but does not need to be precision. With a good rest, I can usually hit a 12" square at 100 yards with my .22RF more often than I miss. I need a small steel target to try my 45 at that range....just th ::)ought of that!

I like my BC Carbine.  I'm almost out, so I gotta roll some ammo for it.  I was going to ream it to .454 or .460 it, and then I said "why".  I've got Handis in the .45LC, .45-70, .445SM, .500S&W and the Maxi.  I load hunting loads in them, not Cowboy Action cause I don't do that.  I am playing with Trail Boss under LSWCs for smaller game and plinking.  .38s and .44 specials.  Just for fun.

I also have a 45BC re-chambered to 454 and I LOVE IT!!

It shoot very well as a 45 Colt. I worked up loads, and found it fully capable of MOA accuracy. But I was not comfortable loading hot loads for it. I am not concerned with the strength of the action/barrel. Simply concerned with one of those loads getting into a valuable Colt. I pretty sure my Ruger would stand the load but why risk it? SO, I reamed it to 454 and load to about the same velocity just in the 454 case. No worries as these loadings are under or right at starting 454 loads.

It doesn't shoot the same loads very well. But it didn't take very long to find a couple loads that shot just as well.

This target shows five shots thru ragged hole group. If you look you will knotice the lead marks around the one hole lo right. It matches the marks on the holes in the group in the lo left at the edge of the picture. Because it bbelongs to them, not one of the ones in the center of the group.

IMHO it also one of the best looking Handis!!
