Savannah Forts and Cannon
« on: April 03, 2011, 04:06:24 PM »
As I mentioned in another thread, I recently took a vacation to visit my brother in Savannah.  While there, I went all over old downtown and visited a couple of forts (Old Fort Jackson, Pulaski, and what's left of Fort Wayne) and the Tybee lighthouse.  Here's a couple of links to Photobucket albums for the full set of some of the pictures I thought you guys would be interested in (click the links under the representative photos):

Old Fort Jackson

Fort Pulaski

Cannon around Savannah (The Lynx was a complete surprise)

Tybee Island Lighthouse and Museum (Only 2 cannon here, but I think you guys will like them and some of the other pictures.  I was surprised at the number of firearms in the museum, and especially that they had a wheellock, which is a particular passion of mine)

The Roundhouse Railway Museum (Slightly off topic, but I thought some of you may be interested - particularly in the old belt driven machines)

Click on the above for a video of the locomotive on the roundhouse.

This was also my first time traveling by train.  Overall, I really enjoyed it, though on the way there, my train was delayed about an hour away from my destination by a fire on the tracks in Ludowici: http://www.wtoc.com/global/story.asp?s=14316992

(Click the picture to see what we saw after the 4 hour delay.)

I've got a number of other pictures of old downtown Savannah, so if any of you would like to see them, let me know.

Cool footage!

What was the source of the fire?  Just a forrest fire?

I hadn't checked fully until you asked, but on the link I provided to the news article, they say:

"It started out as a controlled burn, turned into a small brush fire, and the wind picked it up."

Never try a controlled burn when it's really windy! ???

Yea.  Control and wind don't belong in the same sentence - unless 'loose' is in there as well.

I guess the Georgia burn department doesn't have any communication with the New Mexico burn department.

Thanks for posting your albums; some fine artillery pics.
RIP John. While on vacation July 4th 2013 in northern Wisconsin, he was ATVing with family and pulled ahead of everyone and took off at break-neck speed without a helmet. He lost control.....hit a tree....and the tree won.  He died instantly.
