Quill?
« on: April 18, 2011, 05:15:27 PM »
I'm very familiar with Cannon fuse and just purchased some Friction Primers, now I am told of using a Quill. What is a Quill? This is new to me.

As far as I know a quill (feather tip) was first used by navies for quick firing on the roll of the deck when sighting a target .

They would not cut barefoot sailors feet like some friction type metal primers  . After use they would be laying about , the quills are softer then metal primers .

They are easy to make and have come up several times B4. They go off instantly BANG like a fire cracker .

We could tell you how to do it ..... But if there is an easy way to search if could be brought back up . It would save a lot of keystrokes .

I did a search called "how to make quills" and came up with this link below.  Andy's post is excellent; look for Rifleshooter2's post; you will see lots of excellent photos and this is exactly how Mike and I make our quills.  We bury them half way into the powder charge and find they provide 'INSTANT!' ignition.  Never had one fail.

Smokin' my pipe on the mountings, sniffin' the mornin'-cool,
I walks in my old brown gaiters along o' my old brown mule,
With seventy gunners be'ind me, an' never a beggar forgets
It's only the pick of the Army that handles the dear little pets - 'Tss! 'Tss!

My bad.  I was aware of SOME of the links being dead, but I've been at work or on the road for the last 4 weekends.  (OK, lame excuse).

If you take the NUMBER in the GBO link (from the references sticky): as (59198.0) and do a search, it will give you a list of stuff in which (highlighed too) is the link.
