Barrel slugging
« on: March 29, 2011, 08:28:18 AM »
I'm thinking about using a .432 swaged roundball to slug the bore on my .357's.  Is .432" too big?

Probably not assuming it's dead soft lead. I have used a .375 RB to slug several so a .432 should work and will give you more area to measure on. Remember to lightly oil the bore first. Once started, pushing the slug through is pretty easy. What gun are you doing?

Why not a lead wad cutter or SWC ? more surface area to get a good mesurement .

I want to do my Taurus 4" and my Marlin 1894 levergun.  The reason I'm going to use the .432 is because I have a bunch of them.  I'm just concerned about getting it stuck in the bore.

I'm sure you coild drive it through once it got started. I think it would be difficult to start that ball in the muzzle of a 357. Try this; roll the ball, back and forth, between two flat pieces of steel/iron (make a sausage shape). Another way may be to squeeze the ball in a vise a bit at a time and turning it squeezing it into an oblong shape smaller in diameter..

I would be very careful rolling between anything , if the lead picks up a partical of steel , grit , sand etc you might damage the bbl. Just a thought.

The lead ball to bore interference of 0.074" seem like a lot.  maybe drill a small diameter hole through the lead ball?  Then getting it to squeeze into the bore won't be as difficult.  Keep fingers clear when drilling...

Or just buy lead egg sinkers that already have a hole in them, just make sure they're not the non-lead type.  ;D

This is what I was going to suggest. I had a listing of which size to caliber but haven't found it. If I stumble across it I'll post up the info.

Ah ha I found it.

Egg Sinker Size:

Size 10
For use in .270, 7mm, and .30 Calibers

Size 9
For use in .338, .348, 38/.357, and 35 Calibers

Size 8
For use in .41, .44, .45, and .475 Calibers.

As with everything else use good smart safety procedures, like starting with checking to see if gun is loaded..........
