fuel pump

     I have a 1998 Chevy S10 2.2 pick up. Went to the store yesterday morning. Came out and it started right up. Put it in gear and it quit. It would turn over but wouldn't start. Son in law towed me home. Tried again late last night same thing. Went out this morning and took the cover off the fuse box and beat on the fuel pump relay. It started right up. Let it run a few minutes and drove it up and down the driveway. Turned it off and on a dozen times. Fire up every time. How do i know if it is the pump or the relay? My main concern is am i going to get 30 miles from home and have it quit again?

We have to change out fuel filters about that millage on chevys . we get about 120000 out of pumps on average.

     Looks like kind of a toss up. It has 133,000 miles on it. Probably call the guy that does my service work in the morning and see what he thinks.

it'll go another 133 if you take care of it.
i'd spend the money if it needs the pump.
probably due for a filter anyway?
buy the good pump if it needs it, not one
of those junk far east cheapos.

The original equipment pumps from one supplier of that time had a reputation of lasting about 60,000 miles as did the cheaper line of aftermarket pumps.  A quality pump will last as long as the truck as long as you don't let the tank run low.  Fuel in the tank is what supplies the cooling for the pump motor.  Let it run low and the pump heats up which isn't good.

The wife has a 2000 Jimmy and I  put a fuel pump in it at about 95,000 miles ...I have a 1998 Z-71  pickup with 252,000 miles...I've put two fuel pumps on it..

I'd put one in it as it's telling you it's going to go...

i don't know how often you're changing
fuel filters, but you ought to consider
a fresh filter at least once a year minimum.
this excuse for gas we have now is full of
trash,and an even slightly clogged filter
works a pump harder than normal. a
new filter is a whole lot easier to replace
than a pump, and cheaper too.

    Truck started right up yesterday morning. Headed for the garage. Got about 1/2 mile from home and the damn think quit. The town cop was behind me. He pushed it off the street. Called my mechanic and was told his helper didn't show up yesterday. 2 1/2 hours later he shows up to get the truck. Told him to put in a new fuel filter while he had it. Raining like crazy. Sure was hot setting in that damn truck with no air and the windows up for 2 1/2 hours.

did you get it fixed?


you may also want to get a fuel pump
relay to carry as a spare.
they go for about 10.00 +- for most vehicles.
my bil's truck quit and we were able to
switch out the window/lock relay with the
fuel pump relay(same part on that application)
and get it home. i started toting a spare for
myself after that.

be curious to see what the labor charge is on your fuel pump. last one i did was a 93 chev,snipped a hole in the bed over the tank, dropped new pump in, pop riveted bed piece back in and slid bedliner back over it. took about a hr.

   That is the way i would do it too hillbill. Don't really know the price of a pump. Called the local parts stores and got prices from $140 to a high of $265 at Auto Zone. Average price was $155. One nice thing is when he hands me the bill i tell him damn that will take 4 months of social security checks to pay that. He tells me yeah you have done that before. At least i get my money from you sooner or later. Tried that with a couple other so called customers and never seen them again.

   Mechanic just called.  Said the top of the tank was rotted out. New gas tank,fuel pump and labor.   $440.00.

     Got the truck back. New gas tank and fuel pump. $440 plus 8 % sales tax. No fuel filter. He said the fuel lines were in bad shape and needed replaced. Said it was late and he was going away for the week end and didn't want to get into that. Said he would do fuel filter next oil change. Runs and starts great now.
