22cal target pistol ammo, the best???
« on: April 05, 2011, 01:59:49 PM »
I have a ruger MkI and MkII 22cal target pistols.  Which company manufactures the best quality, the most accurate 22cal pistol ammo?

My wife and two sons are going for there CCW license and the final part of the course is shooting the 22cal handguns.  Its a 5 week course and i'd like to take them shooting soon so they get in some practice.   CZY

What shoots in mine many not shoot worth a crap in yours...

My wife and I both shoot benelli's for bullseye competition. Hers LOVES RWS rifle, mine loves Remington and CCI STD vel. Hers refuses to shoot the Remington. I mean it shoots RWS into one 30 cal hole and the rem into a golf ball... maybe!

I have a Marlin Squirrel that LOVES Remington Cyclone but shoots Remington Vipers like a shotgun. I also have a Marlin lever that shoots EVERYTHING WELL!!! I mean shorts or long rifles, std, HV or hyper velocity. All of it shoots really well.

Go buy a box of a couple different brands and hit the range with them. The extra trigger time is whats needed anyhow!!

Federal 22 Auto Match is a good choice for reliability, accuracy and price since they are not shooting in a match with groups being measured to determin a winner, they can often be found in Wal-Mart.

Every 22 rimfire has it's own personal preference for ammo.
I have 3 Ruger Mark I's: one is a standard 6", one a 5 1/2" Target & one has a 6" Tactical Solution set up on it and they all shoot extremely well Federal Auto Match.
Federal Auto Match is the best bang for my buck for me and my Ruger's.

Try RWS , CCI green tag or Fed target if you can find one as a start . But like mentioned each gun has its own best.
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

True all guns will very some with accuracy from various brands and types, but I have found that over all the Federal Match seems to be the best quality function and accuracy in all my guns. What I mean by this is it might not be the most accurate in my Colt Cadet, but in my S&W 2206 the CCI is more accurate and as reliable as the Federal, but then in my Ruger the CCI patterns instead of grouping. However the Federal in all my pistols and rifles gives very reliable function and good general accuracy in all, but some is even better in accuracy for what ever reason.

+1 on the automatch.  it's the only thing that is 100% reliable in my 22A and my daughters P22

Allot of the guys I shoot with like the Federal TGT ammo too so I would say def try that. BUT my Benelli will not shoot it well or reliably.  My one ruger eats it fine but it shoots most everything reliably.
One that I find is not a good choice is the federal champion. Old stuff was great current offrings are junk.
Also if allowed to shoot HV steer clear of the kmart/wallmart milk carton bulk pkged trash. It's sub quality and I have personally experienced and cleaned the results of it's use.

Good luck and post up what you do. And how the gun like is!

I'll place reliability over accuracy.  It doesn't matter if you can put every round in the same hole if you have problems with it feeding.  Just keep putting different brands thru each one until you find which they like the best.  Get spare magazines for whatever they will carry also, I carry four at present, and will be getting two more.

I am curious, is the reason they will be shooting .22s because that is all the range is suited for?  If they are going to carry I would say they should use the piece they will be carrying.  I qualified with my Ruger 9mm, and most of my rounds made a doublefist size hole in the middle of the target.  But it's heavy for me and my bad joints, so my carry wound up being a Bersa .380, which is 100% reliable no matter what I put thru it.

A FIVE week course just to excercise your God given, constitutionally guaranteed right to protect yourself from evil?

I wish Wisconsin was that "progressive".   Here, if you can't prove to the court that you "ran away" first YOU WILL BE CONVICTED.  (duty to retreat even in your own house), thanks to many years of democratic opression.

I think you may be a little carried away with that assumption.  If you have a reason to be afraid for your life, or the life of others, you may protect yourself in Wisconsin.  That does not include 5o yard shots, but if the bad guys are close enough to cause harm you may protect and will prevail in court.  It must be defensive, not offensive.  And it makes sense for those planning to defend themselves with a gun to know how to use it.

Glad I don't live in WI and instead live in MO with it's castle doctrine.
