I'm going to Louisiana to try and kill a pig tomorrow, wish me luck!

Lot`s of luck! Wish I was going with you!!
Louisiana is my homestate! Although I reside in Colorado at the present time.
What part of Louisiana are you hunting? Some of my summers were spent at Ft Polk and let me tell you some of the nightime recon patrols or map classes were real interesting!
Several times on some of these night patrols our squad would come upon a sounder of wild hogs, talk about chaos! Troops were running in different directions, hogs were squealing and snorting! Pure bedlam and we were suppose to be quite and no flashlights. Some of the troops fell over into pretty deep ravines choked with vines.
While on Fire Guard at nightime we carried blanks and on several had to fire at hogs raiding the garbage cans! You have not seen anything until you see a half grown shoat trying to get out the closed end of a big aluminum trash can.
So keep us posted on your hunt and post pictures of your pigs!
The above story with the hogs occurred in the late 50`s!

I'm going to be in Columbia, La at a place called Wild Hog Ridge. I guess it's about an hour south of Monroe. I've never been there before so I really don't know what to expect, other than impressions I've gathered from they're website. I'll be posting a full report with the good, the bad and the ugly. Hopefully I'll be successful.

Once again good luck!
You will be in good hunting territory, I went to college at Louisiana Tech there in Ruston about 30-45 miles from Monroe back in the 60`s. Did a lot of deer and squirrel hunting in that area when I was going to school.

They are mean down here. Should have a good time . Seems to be a good crop this year but I am around simsboro area just north of jackson/bienville wma. Have fun, be safe, and watch for snakes

Yeah, some of those mosquitoes are like "dive bomber`s! Never had to much problems with rattlers in that neck of the woods but water moccasins and copperheads were real plentiful. But with a good crop of "piggies" the snakes find themselves high on the hogs`s menu!

The hunt went well. We had perfect weather and although I treated my clothes with permetherin and wore repellant, it really wasn't needed. The bugs just weren't biting, maybe the stiff breeze prevented it.
There were three of us in our party and we all got pigs. Mine was 85 lbs, with the other two weighing 85 and 100 lbs.
My gun was a Marlin lever with iron sights in .357 Mag loaded with 158 gr cast on top of 13.5 gr AA#9. The shot was taken at 30 yards and the pig didn't move an inch after I shot him, he just squealed a bit and went down.
He was coming towards me and the shot entered the head/neck just behind his left ear. The bullet traveled the entire length of his body before exiting just in front of the left rear leg. I was actually aiming between the eyes but either he moved or I did. It wasn't a perfect shot but it was a good one.
The club itself was pretty nice, with acommodations about what you would expect at a hunt camp. Not fancy but comfortable. The owner is named Jerry Bailey and he was very hospitable. He fed us well and was friendly and personable, as were his guides. The hogs were in a fenced in area and the terrain consisted of some slight hills and dense vegetation. The way the hunt worked was our guides would be in stands with us and Jerry and his son Shannon acted as drivers, pushing the hogs our way.
I'm sure there's some people that would consider this a canned hunt and not find it very appealing, but I enjoyed myself a great deal and since I'd never hunted hogs before I thought it would be a good idea to learn in this environment. I will most likely come back again since I did have such a great time, and I have no qualms recommending this place to anyone.

Nothing beats a 100% success story...and at 85#'s he will be one good eating porker. You shot it..and with a 357 Magnum. Your results at 30 yards are encouraging to me. I am cooking up a load for my Handi-rifle in .357 Mag for hunting hogs to 100 yards (if they ever return to my neighborhood - it has been almost 18 months with only four seen and one out of four taken November 2010). Everything for you came together: no bugs, good guides, good host, good food, good weather, and a successful hunt. Well done.

You know, I was a little aprehensive about the .357, I've read som many conflicting viewpoints regarding the suitability of it for that application. I've also read horror stories about seemingly indestructible pigs, along with tales of pigs being killed with a .22. Iwas also uncertain about a 158 gr cast. I didn't know if a heavier bullet would be better, penetration s expansion, and everything else.
So in the end I decided to go with the round that I'd been loading and shooting for the last 8 months, and it seemed to work out fine. I think with the penetration I got it wouldn't have any problem with a larger animal, or a greater distance.
Anyway, good luck with your load developement.

This is the reason for it all! I cooked these guys up yesterday and stuck them in the freezer to take to my daughter's home in Chicago for her graduation party. She just got a Master's in Nursing, and it gives me an incredible feeling to be able to feed all the family with an animal I shot.

Yes, GH1, being able to feed family something that you obtained in the field is one of the most satisfactory feelings on earth. At one time, between careers, we had little money for about 6 weeks. We ate venison every day for a month and it got us through. You would be surprised how many meals a 80# deer can provide when you process it yourself (:

If you neglect the cost of transportation, lodging, equipment, meals, expendables, and gratuities, the meat is really quite cheap...

The experience, the fun, and the bragging rights are priceless.

My family is always braggin' on me in the quantity of meat that I take for our use and its cost ($50.00/pound) as compared to "store-bought" ($3.95/pound). After tractor fuel and maintenance; herbicide, fertilizer, and seed; transportation, fuel, and maintenance; lodging, food, and drink; pre-hunt shooting and sighting in; reloading; licenses; butcher processing; and "incidentials"; the cost per pound of wild game is rather more expensive than the Publix where the meat was made and no animals were harmed.

It's pretty hard to put a value on the therapeutic qualities of a weekend of hunting. That alone is worth the price of admission, actually getting an animal is icing on the cake.
