Sight plug screw for handi?
« on: April 07, 2011, 09:15:30 AM »
I am not having much luck finding a front sight sight plug screw , I was wondering if anybody knew what size and tread pitch ? it seems to be smaller than a 6x48

I see alot of good ideas , I think it must be a 3x48 and it might be a little while before I find one .  I like the black rtv idea but it coould be messy :> It gave me an idea however . I think for now I will treat the hole with rem oil and screw the loose end of a cut O ring into the hole and cut it off flush . I should be able to screw it back out fairly easy with a small scewdriver later . Thank ya'll for all of the input !

Never measured it, but 3-56 is a possibility.   Common for shotgun beads.

It's likely 3-48 if it's smaller than 6-48, those are the two most common front sight screwn sizes on modern H&R rifles.

Try a 'hobby shop' that caters to the RC guys.

If it is a 3-48,  Brownells does not carry it and the H/R parts list does not identify the screw size or number of threads per inch for the any of their screws and they do not list any plug screws anywhere Brownells or H/R in that size that I can find.

I do have fillister head 3-48 screws in a screw kit, that I got from Brownells years ago, but  Brownells no longer carries them.

Brownells does list a tap for a 3-48 but no die in that size.

The standard screw in that diameter seems to be the 3-56, but no plug screws are available in that size.

The smaller size is 3-48, IIRC H&R has the plug screws for it, but seems to me they cost $5 to get one with shipping from them, but maybe if you're nice when you ask, they'll just send one to ya!! I made my own for the 6x45 Handi from the 3-48 front sight screw, just carefully cut a slot in it with a dremel cutoff tool.  ;) (866)776-9292

It is just a hole you want 'filled' rather than sitting there empty looking, right?
A friend is fond of using small leadshot to carefully 'peen' into the hole. He elongates an oversize shot a bit, then forces it down in and, with a small brass hammer justs peens the top down flush.
After a little oil it blends in pretty good with a dark barrel.
Ive used round toothpicks or skewers of the right dia to oil and twist in to take the threads and nip off close. A little light tappingon the stub flattens it out and black magic marker colors it up.
Figured if a screw ever turned up Id use it, but so far its just fine.

Black RTV silicone works too, won't rust or draw moisture, easy to remove when you want.  ;)
