Made this one out of 1.75" brass round stock on a standard modern 16/60 lathe, and did most of the radiusing and detail work by hand with a file. barrel has a 2.5 degree taper
Throwing chips roughing the barrel
roughed out, and started the details
Taper turning

NICE set of pictures! How big is the bore?
The bottom of the bore looks right-much smooth!

Thanks! Glad you think it looks good. The bore is reamed to .516" as suggested for a .50 caliber musket ball. starting the carriage tonight hopefully.

Take LOTS of pictures. Sort through and post a representative pix at each stage. We're looking forward to seeing the pix of smoke and flame too!

With the brass I have, I polished it once and now am just letting it patina on its own. I'd give it a couple months and see how it looks.

Walter
the trunnions were machined to a .005 press fit, frozen in liquid nitrogen for 5 minutes to shrink them, and pressed in with a hydraulic press before they re expanded. i may still braze them if needed.
