I currently shoot Contenders in pistol format only (223, 375Win & 309JDJ)but am considering trying the rifle version for deer hunting. Does anyone have experience with the 300 Whisper? Can you tell me what kind of volocities you're getting?

I still find it hard to believe that anyone would consider the .300 whisper for a deer huntin round. This round was designed to be a sub-sonic .30 cal for obvious reasons, and none of them point to huntin deer. Have you ever seen a .300 whisper expand an hp?

I have a T/C Contender Carbine in 300 Whisper. I have killed deer with it. I load 150gr Hornady SST and have never had a problem killing a deer. All shots have been 100yds or less and have yet to recover a bullet. I would not shoot sub-sonic loads at a deer.

Thanks for the replies, obviously I would not consider a sub-sonic load for deer hunting. I've already killed deer with the 375 & 309 and I'm looking for something different and fun to shoot. As for the opinion that it's not designed or suitable for deer hunting, below is an excerpt from JD Jones description of the Whisper family on the SSK website.

Whispers®: A wide range of calibers encompass the 'Whisper®' series of cartridges. A "Whisper®" cartridge must be capable of sub-sonic extreme accuracy with very heavy bullets for its caliber; i.e. 240 grains in 30, as well as moderate to high velocity while maintaining excellent accuracy with light bullets for the caliber; i.e. 125 at 2300 FPS in 30. The 300 Whisper® was the first of the series, and, contrary to what you may have read about it, the fact of the matter is the cartridge was designed as a multi-purpose cartridge from the beginning.........It has been very successful and has gained wide acceptance as a hunting round for mid-size game, such as deer, and has probably taken a wider variety of game than any other handgun cartridge in the same time span. .......

WN, I didn't mean to say it wasn't possible to kill a deer with a .300 Whisper. Nor did I imply that you would do so with sub-sonic ammo.
My point was , the design of this round is to load a big rifle bullet with limited case capacity for propellant. Obviuosly limiting velocities . I can't imagine that it's possible to load a 150 gr bullet in a .300 whisper and push it past 2,000 fps. This range generally limits the ability of rifle rounds to expand effectively on impact. And if I might say could the reason you've never recovered a bullet from game with this round be because it is passing through with minimal resistance much as a fmj would do?
Well this is America hunt with what you want , as long as it's legal.
But with so many more effective chamberings designed for putting down deer. I'm still baffled that someone would choose this round for deer hunting.

I have not shot anything (deer) with mine yet but I am getting 2000 fps with a 125 gr. Nosler BT out of a 10" barrel.

You would have no problem taking a deer with the 300 Whisper. It is one of the best all around cart. out there. You can push a 125 gr. Nos. Bil. tip over 2400 fps with 22 gr's of H110, or about 2100 fps with a 150 gr. and about 18 gr's of H110. It will give you aprox. the same power as the 7.62x39mm (AK 47 rnd) on the high end, as well as top notch performance in the sub sonic area's. It is one of the most versital rounds out there, and if you could only have one bullet it would be a hard one to beat. Another one to look at is the 338 Whisper, same type of set up, but bigger. You can get it in short or long barrels, bolt act., or an AR 10 with a 338 Whisper upper for it from SSK and shoot anywhere from sub sonic rnd's with 300 grn heads, to very hot loads with 200 grn bil tip heads. If this still won't fit the bill, take a look at the 510 Whisper.... WOW! 600+ yards in sub sonic! JD Jones has made a lot of good rounds in his time, but the Whisper's really are worth a look.I know a few people with Whisper's and everyone of them put the Whisper's at the top of their list.

I'm quite aware of the .300 whisper's ballistics. I wouldn't hunt with a 7.62 X39 either. Seeing that this round was developed as an assult rifle round and ultimately designed to be less effective at killing than a full size load. I'm sure I wil here back from people claiming success stories with both of these rounds now. Hey good for you. Glad to hear about your success, but as for me, I'll stick to chamberings that were designed to kill quickly and efficiently.
