Finally fitted! RANGE REPORT
« on: April 05, 2011, 04:46:09 PM »
Been working on my maxi barrel, fitting it to a sb2 receiver.  Didn't do it because of the strength, it was because it had to much headspace on the sb1 (having FTF's).  It would not close on the sb2, so it gave me some metal to take off the barrel face to reduce the headspace.

Been working on that latch shelf for a week!  File a little at a time, shoot it, pops open 1 out of 3 times.  Did this probably 4-5 times, but today..............10 shots nary a pop open :) :)  No FTF's at all.
The latch contact didn't change much in width, but the latch felt different......more solid.  Anyhow, I'm one happy camper. ;D

Nice work Bobby. Sounds like it was time well spent. :D
Shoot it for groups and show us some pics. ;) I took a box of 38 special ammo out the other day and did some plinking with my Maxi.
I've been shooting everything from 130gr. 38 specials to 200gr. hardcast Maxi's in it and it shoots everything great.

Thats great Bobby!
Now, dont get tempted to take any more strokes on that, just use it and let it all seat in (it will).

Glad to hear!!

Something else to consider is angles. It's easy to get them off a bit when there is allot to remove. A steeper angle is more prone to pop opens. I'm not saying they should all be shallower, or that you did that. I'm just pointing out that it's easy to create a problem if the shelf angle gets steeper.

I agree that the latch shelf is really ticky, ya gotta be slow and careful.  I had to smoke it a lot and sometimes change the pressure on the stone and file to get good contact across the latch.  Maintaining the forward angle was not as big a problem for me.

Once started it gets to be an obsession to get things right.  Thanks for your advise on my 'quirky' barrel.  Wondering now if I'll have to do latch work if I reface the breech to make the rim depth shallower.  Glad you finally got yours shooting good.

rd...,

Its worth the trouble if you had a problem like mine.  It would FTF 1 out of 4, sometimes worse.

Excellent work Bobby ;D ;D  I'm glad you got it.  I've never had that much trouble with a Handi, but I keep 3 or 4 frames around to try them on.

bobby,

I admire your patience.  Halfway through that type of project I would have broke out an angle grinder. :o  Let us know how the accuracy is and what loads work for you.

Here is the range report that I promised.  This loading is about 1 gr. over maximum, so use at your own risk.  The only way I would have tried this, is knowing now that the barrel is mounted on an SB2 receiver that can take the pressure.

I am really happy with the maxi now.  Good groups and no FTF's at all.

Dp,

That was the 180gr Hornady xtp.  It shoots great, but I have actually gotten better groups in the past with the 180gr ssp.  I want to try some of the 180 gr Speer spire points, but at $31 a 100, they a little spendy for me.

Thanks all.  This rifle is a testament to the knowledge and skill freely shared on this great site.

I think you definately made the right decision to refit this barrel rather than the previous rim-seat shim idea, and your group proves it!
Of course, we know you have a guardian angel helping out  ;).
I only hope others will take to heart the admonition that when rechambering first check the rim seat and headspace with a case to ensure it is not too deep already. Then do not even touch the bottom of the rim seat with the reamer! Only a few thou' cut can mess you up big time.
