Varmint nightmare
« on: April 26, 2011, 02:09:03 PM »
I ordered the 500 box of the Varmint nightmare .224 in 55Gr, SP W/C. my first time with these. I want to shoot them in a Savage 223 and a savage 22-250.
I have shot and reloaded many of the Hornady bullets in this profile for both rifles with good results.
But my question is.
Do you need to keep the FPS down with these bullets?
I read somewhere these are a thin-jacketed bullet, or am I thinking of the Nightmare extreme.
Or was this an Internet rumor for either.
I did several searches today and could find nothing on this.
Thanks.

You probably won't be able to push them fast enough from the .223 to be an issue but if they are indeed a thin jacket design then you may have to tone down the 22-250.Try them and see.All you have to lose is a little time and a few bullets.

Put 500 VNEs thru my 22-250 at near max loads without detriment.
The difference between people who do stuff and people who don't do stuff is that the people who do stuff do stuff.

I do not think the Mid South bullets are all that fragile. If any thing, they have thick jackets. I have not shot any of the 55 grain, but have the 50 and 34 grain varmint nightmares and have found them to be pretty solid construction, maybe too good for my applications. However, they do shoot well.

Here are two, 5 shot groups at 100 yards shot on different days with the 34 grain Mid South bullet out of a stubbed H&R 22K Hornet

Good Luck and Good Shooting

I have pushed them 34grs at max 4000 - 4200 fps in my 220 swift and 22-250 man you should see what it does to PD and GS

Matter of fact i'll show you
