Best Buy in 223?

What is the best buy in 223 for a daily light weight carry rifle for walking around? Real walking 10-20 miles a day.

$600 is a little high. How about including used as well as new?

Savage makes a Sporter in .223, the Model 25 Classic, that's both lightweight AND good-looking.

The street price I'm seeing on them is about $500 (new).

I have a used H&R Handirifle in 223.  It was beat up when I bought it.  I cut barrell to 18 1/2", recrowned barrell, shortened cracked stock, cammo painted metal, sanded then varnished wood, added a shotgun barrell band for the sling and put on a peep sight.  Whole thing weighs under six pounds including a full side saddle bandoleer.  My work and about $200, this includes paint, gas for the car, peep sight, 225 walmart (???) rounds and everything else.   Short, sweet shooting out to 200yds, carried on a sling I braided from latigo to give extra flex when carrying.  After 200 yds, I can't really see anything smaller than a coyote anyhow.  Just getting old and weak eyed I guess.  100yds I am happy with a 4" group with this rifle, 200 yds I'm pretty consistent up to coyote, someone else with better eyes should do better.
Best of all I took it apart so I know reliability and no one else has one just like mine.
If you don't need to go past 75 yds an H&R 20 guage is even easier to convert, giving you a firearm lighter still with the versatility of birdshot, buck, and buckhammers for even less money.

Give the guy a break... and the truth...  the best deal out there today on a cheap (and accurate) .223 is the Savage edge !!   If one shops around, one can be had for about $275... and with a bit of 'tweaking' on the trigger, it can be well under MOA with the right loads.  Oh, I forgot.. Made in USA also !!  Put a decent scope of quality on it, and be shooting half inch groups "outa-the-box" ( ...with the right loads..)   I have one, it loves sierra 55's and Varget loads..  Bob

If your not beyond considering a break open single shot, I would think the Handi in .223 would be pretty tough to beat.

The ADL is $349.95 and you'd actually have something.

You have to go to the store.  They have them in the sale flyers all the time.

for a walk around varmiter my main consern woud be the trigger. Your using a .223 to hit small targets and being the walk around gun is going to be shot off hand and when its on the bench doesnt have the weight to steady itself like a bull barrel the trigger is going to be even more critical. If its going to be a savage its going to have to have an accutrigger or a model 700,77, or 70 that can be ajusted. I guess for me if its a walk around gun id want it to be a light gun and that would probably mean a lightweight 20 inch gun. If im going to haul around a 22 inch sprorter weight barreled gun with a tiny 22 hole in it i might as well get a flutted bull barrel. Me i guess my first pick would be something like a model 7 stainless.

My carry 223 is a 788 Rem with a Leupy 3-9 long range reticule.   I gave $300 for it 10 years ago with a Tasco scope and sling.  It would cost you a little more today but if you buy a good older rifle it will retain its value better than a new one.  This one shoots just as good as my 700 BDL at about half the price.

I have a nice ADL I paid $299.00 for.  I put it in a $65.00 BDL stock because I don't like plastic.  Shoots 1/2"@100 yards with Remington bulk 50 grain hollowpoint ammo.
