Telescoping Ramrod
« on: December 24, 2003, 10:47:24 AM »
Any opinions on the use of a telescoping ramrod.

I may be interesested in a custom MZ barrel without a place for conventional ramrod storage, IF a telescoping ramrod is a good substitute.

Please advise.

Thanks,

Smoky

Like a radio antenna?

A regular ramrod attached to a backpack ala quiver makes more sense, if only to me.

smoky - Last year I got a custom barrel from VVCG with a hanger bar
for a regular foream so the same forearm could be used on both CF and
ML barrels. Got a telescoping ramrod and made a quiver from heavy
cloth with a strap attached to both top and bottom of the quiver. The
strap was long enough to go around neck and one shoulder with the
end of the ramrod positioned a little below the head (so it won't catch
on tree branches) on my back. It works pretty good!

Stick with a conventional rod (synthetic ones are tough) even if it is a pain to carry. The telescoping ones are just not sturdy enough and out in the field is no place for a broken rod. Jim
Said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it.

Smokey,

I carry two ramrods when using my custom barrel/encore as this barrel also does not allow the ramrod to attach to the barrel.  My ramrods are attached directly to my backpack.  My Cabelas pack has a long section for packing a spotting scope and the rods fit in their nicely. My pack then attaches to my portable treestand and off I go....  So far no problems using this method but my barrel is only 24 inches so the rods   ofcourse  are not much longer.

I have had an extending ramrod on my knight, for a few years now and I like it a lot. It has reverse threads in the tip and it unscrews and locks out thus increasing in length by about 5 inches. The extra length keeps me from having to use a T-handle in the field while hunting. At the range I don't use it at all, I just use my range rod. Good luck
Dream big,
Greg
