RCBS/Pact Powder Dispensor
« on: December 25, 2003, 02:59:07 PM »
Last year I bought the Pact digital scale. I like this product, now I am thinking of buying the powder dispensor that goes with. Does any one have any input on this product? I am not a volume loader, weigh every load. I do load for pistols, which will eat up a lot of ammo, and long guns as well, but it is a hobby for me.

I bought the Pact scale last year and just got the new faster version of the powder dispenser a few months ago.  It works flawless.  They two link together and it drops powder with .1 grain accuracy with everyting I have tried from the IMR 4398? (light orange can, very slow powder) to IMR 4227 (short extruded powder).  It will drop  29 grains of IMR 4198 in about 15 seconds or a little less.  I was loading 30-30's one night using it and was amazed at how quick I got 50 loaded with powder.

I have the green version and like it very much. I load steel shot shells and the Alliant STEEL powder is large flake and it does a exellent job. Very consistant and while it's throwing a charge I'm assembling a shell. Only this is that you have to calibrate it for the powder you are using so changing powders means another calibration but it only takes a few min.

........I have the combo from RCBS and it works well...let it warm up a couple of mintues and calibrate it and keep the drafts off and it does great........BUT it is slower and for pistol and rifle charges with ball type powder I wish I had passed on the dispenser...a good powder measure throws consistant charges and except for the long extruded type rifle powders a good micrometer measure will repeat charges well......for the log type powders the dispenser can do good repeatable charges.........but for the money I wish I had just got the scale and spent the money on other speciality items.....the scale is great and I use it for case sorting and rimfire sorting ect.........again no complaints on fuction.....it is my own uses that make it less than perfect for my use........good luck and good shooting-loading!!!!

You are right on the money bigdaddy, I did not have a need to buy the dispenser until I started shooting calibers that like the long extruded powder (25-06, 375 Win, 30-30).  Until I started fooling around with them all I used was a Hornady powder measure, and still do unless I am using the long extruded powders.  Another thing to consider is the Hodgen SC line of powders that are supposed to go through a powder measure with good repeatability.

Another good use I found for the dispenser is that it is very fast when making up loads with different powder weights when looking for accuracy.  Punch in a number, weigh 5 loads, punch in the next weight and keep going.
