.358 Craig - My New Handi-Rifle Wildcat
« on: April 11, 2011, 05:39:27 AM »
Because this isn't just a wildcat anymore, it's now chambered and alive in my Handi.  Thought I'd share on this board too, so here's a link to the wildcat forum where it's originally been posted....  Enjoy!   8)

It shoots fantastic!  First range session produced a 3 shot group of 1.25" at 100yds.  Minor tweaking should bring it sub-moa, along with less windy conditions!   :o

The new law isn't approved yet, but I fully expect it to be shortly.  No big deal if not.  It's been a fun experience!

I am VERY, VERY interested in this!

Did you do the re-chamber job?

Where and when can I get one done?  ;)

I have been holding off on the .358WSSM because I wanted to take advantage of the full 1.8" if/when it is passed.

Never mind, I just read the other thread. So Wayne York owns the reamer? How much did the re-chamber cost?

I own the reamer  8)  Yes, Wayne did the rechamber job.  $50, plus extractor work, plus shipping.  I think total door-to-door was $90.

Hornady was the long lead item with dies running 4 months.

Looks great. ;D
Should have plenty of thump without being hard on the gun.
Have you run the numbers to compare the ballistics to the other 35's?

It does 2500fps with 200gr (verified data)
Likely 2700fps with 180gr (not tested though)
This is the equivalent of the .358 Winchester, easily.

It does this at relatively low pressure.  With a case as big as the .348 Win, bolt thrust becomes enough of an issue to start being the limiting factor.  The internal case head diameter is slightly larger than the .500S&W which I used as the bench mark.  Using medium powered 50K psi loads for the 500 S&W, I was able to maintain bolt thrust numbers if I keep the .358 Craig at around 44K psi.  This keeps the barrel lug from being battered and becoming loose (at least that's the plan!).

In something stronger, like a falling block or Siamese mauser, this round has alot more horsepower, easily equaling the .35 Whelen.  Running that power level in a Handi wouldn't be something I'd recommend though.  The whole point to this exercise was to develop a relatively low pressure round that won't be abusive to the break-open Handi platform while also providing a serious step up in power and range over the .357 Max.  AND do it within the 1.8" length for the new Indiana deer laws (hopefully approved soon).

That's about as reasonable as it gets.
