Reminds me of being a kid. The railroad crew was digging a huge hole near the tracks, and one of us kids asked what they were doing. Fella told us the hole had rolled off a flat car and they were trying to get a chain around it to load it back up before the next train came through town.

I was working for a guy one time and was in the process of getting my property ready to move a trailer onto. I had things to do and he was giving me grief about getting off of work early when there was clearly no work to do. I told him I just had my well delivered and I wanted to be out there so no one came along and stole it before I could get the pump on it.

He let me go. It sounded reasonable to him.

Years ago i worked for a national home builder . One day while in the office one of the other guys opened a closet and showed me some big SS hooks . I ask what they were and he said sky hooks . Seems they had hired a guy from NY to help clean up trash on the job site . They were playing a joke on him and told him to go get some sky hooks . Well he had washed windows in high rise buildings in NY . He went down and ordered 2 sky hooks , you know the hooks that hold the scaffold to the building when washing windows on high rise buildings . The ones that cost over $500.00 in 1978 dollars . Well the joke players forgot about it until they came in . They were non returnable and the guy who ordered them had left for a better job . AIN"T FUNNY HOW THINGS WORK OUT ?

a buddy of mine was in the army many years ago in the mechanics division in Hawaii he told me about this..

the rookies were told to go to the local shops in town and find them a box of 3/8" muffle bearings they ran out and needed them bad..

the dumb ones came back about 3 hours later tired and warned down from going from shop to shop looking...

the smart ones never came back till the next day then lied and said they looked all night for them..lol

Kinda like my briotherinlaw sending their newbie parts driver to the welding shop for GLASS welding rods. We told a gal here at work that she ws gonna need to get her blinker fluid changed in her tail lights soon but as how there was a national back order it was gonna be a while so she'd need to make sure they were still working a regular basis. Yeah, she was BLOND and proved it every day!

We used to have new recruits stand the "International Date Line" watch while underway keeping an eye out for the red and white intermittently striped line that rims the globe at the Equator.  Hehe.

Once in a while one would fall for being sent to the Hauser Locker for a couple of feet of "black-water line".

My favorite was sending them to the Tool Crib for a "left handed spanner wrench".

True story - we were working in a building and every time the hear came on the fintube would make a noice ( because the hanger was crooked ) . the people in the office called maint. the guy came saw the problem and came out into the hall and got me to come watch . He removes the cover plate on the elec rec over thr fintube . Now everone is watching him . He shakes his head and says just look at that the wires are touching and the red watts are hitting the green watts when the pass . He slips the hanger in position whe no one is looking the makes a deal out of the wire put the plate back on and leaves . a short time later this lady comes out in the hall and said he was so smart . Another time he sent a helper to the elec wholesaler for a bucket of volts . Another time he put two t-stats in an office that 2 women could not agree on the temp to set one , yep it worked . BTW nither had a wire hooked to them .

When I worked on a drilling rig, we were always cutting casing, I was in charge of a newbie, he was watching me getting ready to cut casing. I put a "wrap around" on it for a straight cut, and he asked me what that was, I told him it was called a "reach around", for the next month, anytime someone would be getting the torches, he would ask them if they needed a reach around.

While in the navy, sent many a new lad around the ship looking for a can of relative bearing grease. Couple times the chief was not happy with me.  ::)

When I was in the AF SPs  in Libya in '69 we sent a FNG geek to the Base Hospital for a roll of Fallopian tubes!  He went right to the ER and asked the charge Nurse big as life for the roll of Fallopian tubes.  Good news was she didn't go off on him. Bad news was she was the wife of our Squadron Commander and we ALL go our asses chewed!  Wegot him again later- sent him to watch for "Gungfu", the little european hedgehogs that come out at night.  He spent the whole shift walking around shining his flashlight on F-100 tires!  Joke was on us in the end-that guy went on to be one of the most senior NCOs in the AF!

Working on my Harley many years ago, asked my girlfriend if she could hand me the metric crescent wrench. I never told her the joke. And, one day, we were at a friends house, and he was working on his bike. He asked for a wrench, and my girlfriend asked him if he wanted the metric one. When he asked her what the hell she was talking about, she innocently wanted to know if he wanted a metric crescent wrench. He busted out laughing. When he explained the joke to her, she gave me the dirtiest look, and didn't think it was that funny. gypsyman

thats funny gypsy.  I was in napa the other day and believe it or not, they had a metric crescent wrench as well as a standard.  I busted up laughing as I showed my dad.  Each one had little tick marks on the side showing what size you were on.  But it wasn't as though it had one on one side and one on the other, it was two separate wrenches.  The counter people were giving me funny looks as I cried laughing.

Yep we have then marked 200mm, 250mm, 300mm...............
They still work on inch nuts and bolts though  ;) ;) ;) But then its length not opening size .
Bulldog wrenches are the same , as a matter of fact the first one i saw was metric.

If you live in rice country that has occassional freezes Snipe hunting is no joke, it's a blast! It is a daytime sport though. Those little jets are a hoot to shoot "at". You jump them and they fly a big circle and come back by, sometimes twice. Don't mean to jump the thread but Snipe hunting isn't always a joke.   ear
