I'm thinking of a new handgun, torn between a ruger in 41 mag or 45 colt /45 acp .Then having one of the custom guys do a trigger and  action job .Or just look for a good used fa in 454 and forget the ruger/custom work. I have a S&W 686 357 , a S&W 657 41 and a ruger super blackhawk hunter in  44 mag  all three have scopes . this time i plan on open sights i do reload and shoot  mainly my cast bullets   many tks for your time/input ken

I think if I had the $$'s I'd go straight for the FA, if one could be found.  My .45 Blackhawk is the only pistol I own that I can't get to shoot as good as I want.  I'd sell it but I'm stubborn and WILL MAKE IT SHOOT!

every ruger ive ever bought needed trigger work but the bad news is both of my fa guns did too. They were better then a ruger out of the box but still had to heavy of a pull for precision shooting in my opinion. But theres no doubt the fa is much more gun.

The FA is a great gun & worth the extra cost. Saw one earlier this week (454) that had an asking price of $900! As mentioned the Ruger will need a trigger job for sure & the chamber throats "might" need some attention as well as the forcing cone, just depends.
  The new Ruger flattops seem to be built with a little closer tolorance... tighter cylinder gap, better fit & finish, etc. To me they are a very good gun for the money. I have my son do a trigger job & narrow the front sight, add a pair of my stocks & start burning powder.

I have a custom Ruger and if I ever have that much money to spend on a gun again, it will be a FA.

  If you can shoot offhand better than your Rugers allow, by all means get the FA!  Thank goodness I am not that great of a shot to make an FA necessary. ;D

I've had a bunch and used to shoot Bullseye, so I kinda have an idea of what a good trigger is, and I am satisfied with the trigger on my Ruger 50th .357 as is, and it shoots well too.
My friends FA is nice, for sure and for certain, and if I had the spare bucks for it I expect it would satisfy me also, but in a stand and shoot I hit or miss about as much as he does.

Go for the FA...  You know what they are.  That is a good sign that you will never be satisfied until you have one.

i've had my (New) Flat Top for about six months and the tollerances are very good for cast bullets as was previously mentioned; I don't know if this was luck.  I did the trigger work myself and am very pleased; so much in fact that I am investing in a Bisley grip frame which is getting fitted right now.  Would I, with this hindsight in to the discomfort of the traditional grip frame, have gone out and bought a FA for about what I will have invested.  No.  It is now personalized in my own way and value it all the more.  Just my $.02.
