Alone in the Woods

On of the blessing of my life was that my folks brought us to the pacific northwest in the 60s.

Ive spend hours, days, and weeks in the forests.

No coffee, just a pipe, backpack, and the wonder that is nature

I live in a heavily urbanized area of Honolulu now.  Grew up in northern Minnesota.  Spent a lot of time in the woods.  Kind of miss that.

I find it hard to squeeze into my schedule some spontaneous, relaxation time.
I can appreciate it, and would love to do it, but just can't find the time these days

The woods is  where I feel most content and at peace,

I get paranoid and claustrophobic around tall city buildings and so many peoplesqueezed into the small places. I actually had to move twice in my life (quit my Jobs, because I just couldn't hack it in the cities).  People called me a wuss , but I knew if I didn't get outta there I would surely die.  So I moved took a lower paying Job in a rural community , never looked back and knew I found my place in life. There are wayyy more important things in Life than chasin the $$$$ 's and for me geography is one of 'em.

I live out of town, but still have people around me, I get in the woods and waunder for hours. I like to get on a lake and just sit back while trolling and take in all of mother nature. Times I have just sit in the boat watched the deer, bear, eagles and slow moving clouds in some of the high sierra lakes. Have missed I dont know how many trout because was kicked back in the seat with a cup of joe just taking in mother nature.

When I enter the woods I feel like a guest and try and conduct myself the same.  I find "sound in silence" and suddenly all is well with the world and one finds peace with himself and his creator.  Time seems to stand still as one takes in all the sights, sounds, and smells of what we are so much a part of.

 I've been in and out of the city through out life.  As a child there was around 2 hundred acres of hills and woods to roam with my bird dog.  Now many years later I live around ag/farm land (which the locals mistake for the country) outside of a city.  My time in the woods now is limited to mostly public land and has been with mixed results. A couple of years ago soon after Dad passed I got a boat and that's my get away now fishing.  It's funny how many city friends can't grasp how you could possibly enjoy being alone in the woods or on a boat.  I mainly stick to the smaller lakes with the 10 mph speed limits and away from the recreational boating crowd.  As my brother said some time back, being out there helps you keep your balance and sanity.  Regardsl,  BT

SteveH, I live where you use to, Nortern MN. and hope I never have to leave here, unless it is the calling of the Lord, which me and the little lady are praying about. For now there just isn't anything like setting under a pine tree over looking a lake, beaver pond or what ever and letting the Holy Spirit move as He wishes.

I grew up in Nisswa and graduated High School from Brainerd.  My family moved to southern Minnesota with I was 18 so I followed them.  After graduating college I joined the Army and they sent me to Hawaii.  Have been here ever since.  Growing up in Nisswa I never knew what I had.  Now that I've been away from it for over 40 years I've got better perspective.  That sure is some beautiful country, and you sure can get away from it all in no time.  But I enjoy the convenience of city life and will probably retire here, Lord willing!

I have spent most of my life roaming in the Smokey Mountains and East TN woods, I feel so at peace an almost at 1 with mother nature. I have introduced as many people as I could in hope they would find the same peace and beauty I have. Nothing like sitting in a tree stand watching the sun rise thanking God for his creation!

Very easily, it reminds me of many  time I went camping, and would sit or lie while listening to nature, but at the same time, sometimes I would hear the sound of a train or a truck jake-braking, often miles away the distance and think of ALL the wonders God has given man to enjoy and use-- wisely.
The sound of water boiling on a white gas camp stove, makes me a bit melancholy just thinking of it.

I've lived on the edge of wildlands all my life. On the occasions I have to venture into urban areas it really weighs me down. The longer I spend there the more depressed I get. Then when I drive out of the chaos and can see miles and miles of open country pretty much like God made it I come back to life .

Some would accuse me of being anti-social a hermit, but it seems to me that the folks who are always in such close contact with others all the time are the ones who are hard and indifferent. Where I live people are kind and considerate. You drive down a lonely road here and most of the folks you meet wave. Meet another traveler in a hiking trail, and you usually have a long conversation, and when you part you go away thinking "what a nice guy".

When I was in high school I heard a preacher tell a very cantankerous church member, outside after services,  that when he was in the woods, I'm closer to God than you've been in 40 years. POWDERMAN.
