Off in left field 12ga question
« on: April 19, 2011, 08:55:54 AM »
I was wondering if I could take a 12ga USH barrel and have the rifling removed to make a heavy barreled smooth bore slug gun. Or is that way out in left field? The end result I am looking for is a heavy barreled smooth bore slug and 00buck gun.
Just thinking out loud.

I understand what you're asking, but why? Is there a particular reason you want the heavy barrel?

You could have it sleeved like a turkey shoot gun is built.
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

I want a project to make a short heavy slug/buck gun. The heavy barrel to counter act shorting the barrel to 18 1/2"  and stock to 12" lop, also I want the extra thickness to help when adding front sights to match a peep sight. I want to look and feel like a tank. I like the way a 12ga USH makes it presence known.

In the handbook that came with a browning gold slug gun I owned years ago it said it was ok to shoot lead slugs and buck shot. Something to consider. If you measure the depth of the rifling will you take out more than if the bbl was back bored to 11 ga. ? also could a long tube be added like Briley offers ? The sleeve would work id it was installed correctly . What you might look into is find a good turkey shoot gun builder and have him make a bbl , they do this all the time some are 1.24 inch on the out side and 34-36 inches long depending on local rules . Cutting it back to your spec. should be little trouble. Hey maybe they would do it for 1/2 price since its half as long as a turkey gun  ;D
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

Thanks Shootall
I was afraid that taking the rifling out would make the bore to big. Sleeving it my be the way to go. Or at least you have given me some leads.
Thanks

Why not start with a 20ga.?
But, as cool as your idea is, for my money I think leaving the rifling in and using big round ball loads would make it a dandy Buick stomper.
