Ruger Service
« on: September 01, 2004, 11:21:30 AM »
I recently purchased a M77 Mark II in .338 and, as everyone has said, the trigger is just plain bad (compared to others).  I called a couple of local gunsmiths and they’re telling me it’ll be at least $50 to rework the existing trigger up to $135 to replace the stock trigger with a Timney.  One gunsmith said he could only get the stock trigger down to about 4lbs (not bad but still a little much).  Another smith told me that he's already done three Ruger triggers this summer, he said that ruger has one of the worst stock triggers he's seen.

Finally, I broke down and called Ruger to see what they had to say.  The customer service rep I talked with was real nice telling me what I already knew-the stock triggers aren't adjustable and they're set at around 7 lbs.  I told him that was a really high pull for a non-adjustable trigger and asked what could be done about it.  He told me to ship to rifle back to them (at the New Hampshire location) with a letter explaining what I wanted done (a 3.5 lb pull) and they’d do it for free and have it back to me in about 2 weeks.  He said they could only lighten it to 3.5 lbs, but that ain’t bad compared to over 7 from the factory, and it would only cost me shipping.

All in all, pretty good service from them.  Now, if they could only get the trigger right from the start they'd be ok. 

Take a look at www.centerfirecentral.com and look at the way they modify the trigger and sear to get a lightened trigger pull on a Ruger 77MkII.....I've done a couple and it's worth the time.   Go to their gunsmithing section to see mod's for Remington, Ruger, etc.

Only try the routine if you really know what you are doing.

Welcome aboard!

There's a very good, and detailed set of instructions in the tech section of Ruger Forums that will show you how to get the factory triggers re-worked for exellent service.

I've re-worked at least 150 77 MK IIs over the last few years(including 77/22s, 77/22 mags, and 77/Hornets). I usually will lighten them to about 2 lbs, and take out the creep, which, in my opinion makes them as good or better than most after market triggers. I have taken them down to around 1.5 lbs(safely), but in my opinion, 2 lbs is as low as any hunting rifle should be lightened.

Like S S said, it's most definately worth the time, and effort, but only try it if you're very familiar with triggers, and at least somewhat experienced in working on them.

I've had several MKII triggers reworked to 3 lbs. with excellent results.
