Oct barrel- follow up question-Hey Tim
« on: April 22, 2011, 04:38:36 AM »
Guys,

I enjoyed the posts regarding Tim's conversion of a round barrel to an octagonal barrel using a mill.

But, if a guy could set the barrel in a vise, using some sort of jig, wouldn't it be possible to do this project by using a draw file only?

Yea, I know it would take alot of time.  But I remember reading an article about how gunsmiths in the 1930s would sporterize the 1903 Springfield.  To lighten up the barrel, they would make it considerably thinner by just using a draw file on it for a couple of hours.  Then they would shorten it.

I feel fairly confident that using metal clamps and a vise and metal rails, I could set up a jig so that all I would have to do would be to draw the file across the top of the barrel, towards me, to create the first flat, and then flip the barrel upside down and do it again, etc.

     All comments are welcome.  :-)

Manny,

In Tim's 8-sided barrel thread I think it was gcrank1 that brought up the fact OCT. barrels, back in the day, had been made by hand with a file .  I am sure someone with the skills could do it by hand it would just seem to be a very labor intensive project.

Sure, given time it could be done, but remember, barrels then were a lot softer material, a modern 4140 alloy barrel is much tougher material and then there's the hard spots, several of them in this one, I switched to a carbide end mill because of them and it took me 3˝hrs to do the rechamber by hand.  :-\

Yeah, I know, but it would require a place to put it which also means a bigger home or a new building built, otherwise I'd have a lathe and a full size mill, lots of great buys available on Craigs list, just no place to put them.  :(

With a solid swivel bench vise, so you can get behind it in the proper stance, a new file, a little thought and some time, you certainly can draw file flats, even without a jig. By the time you are done you still won't be an expert until you can take it back to round, but you will be very good.
An old German machinist taught me that. In his apprenticeship he was given a chunk of steel a square and a file and told to make it square. Repeatedly he would take it to the master, repeatedly it was not good enough. Finally it was accepted. In relief he humbly asked,"what can I do next?"
"Make it round"
After that was properly done and accepted he was allowed to use the machine tools.
Klaus was quite a machinist.
