casting question
« on: April 02, 2011, 03:49:23 AM »
Hi All,

I do not cast but I have a friend with a small gunshop who also casts bullets.  I have another friend with a scrap yard so I can get lead on trade for services.   My question is, if I provide 200 pounds of WW or Linotype lead to my casting buddy what would be a fair return for this in cast, sized & lube LRN 230 grain .452s?  That is, should I expect a 1/4 or 1/3 or 1/2 of my lead returned in bullets in exchange for his work?

Well, I guess one way to gauge it would be to compare the cost of commercially made cast bullets to the cost of the alloy you are providing for him.

And think about how close you two are as friends and how much you think his time is worth, and are you willing to help lube bullets or anything else?

I just did a similar deal and gave the fellow back 1/2 of his lead as bullets. I didn't feel I got that great a deal.

BB I cast 255 grainers and figure 28 bullets to the pound. Another thing to consider is that wheelweights are gonna have those steel clips on them and I would guess 10 to 15% waste with them. I honestly would say if you let him have 200 lbs figure at least 20 lbs waste and if you got 80 to 90 pounds of bullets that would be a really decent deal. You would wind up with over 2k bullets x the price of commercial cast.
Life is like a coin you can spend it any way you wish. But you can only spend it once.

BB,

It boils down to the strength of your friendship.  If it is personal and strong, you'll probably get 50% to 100% pay back in boolits.  If it is casual business maybe 25% to 50%.  Less than that and it isn't much of a friendship.

Depends too on how flush your caster is with lead and WW's.  If he has a stockpile that's probably grounds for a liberal pay back.  Times of shortage are more stingy in pay back.

Thanks guys for the input.  My friend does me a lot of favors so I think 25% return would be okay with me.  Since I am banned from casting my own bullets by my Doctor & my wife (Reg. Nurse), this is my next best option.

If you were my friend, I would tell you to come on over and start frying the fish while I made bullets... :D

Now you have piqued my interest.    I am not banned from casting but I don't have a 0.452" mould - yet.  Do you shoot either of 357 Mag or 30-30?

L_O,

I shoot an H&R 357 Maxi, but to date haven't found a non GC bullet that it likes.  I just started loading some 200 grn LRNGCs, RCBS mould, but haven't really worked up a load yet.  My three 45cal rifles and my 410 slug gun seem to hog all my range time. ;D  I don't own a 30-30 (don't tell anybody this on the Handi rifle forum as it is considered a mortal sin) but I have three 30 cal rifles that have only seen jacketed.   I do have a bag of 180 grain LFNGCs to try in my '06 shorty one day.

I am picking up my lead on Saturday and will go see my casting buddy on Monday.  Since his income is from his brick & mortar gun shop and the sale of handloaded ammo & cast lead bullets, I don't mind giving him the lion's share of the lead. He needs to make enough money to stay in business and I need a place to go and tell lies to his customers and eat free oatmeal cookies. ;D

Well gonna have to try this trading WWs for cast bullet thing a second time.  I showed up at the gunshop yesterday with 200# of wheel weights and my friend was busy so I went to look in the back and see if anything interesting from an estate sale had shown up.  Well it had, many unopened boxes of Sierra 300 grain FP .458 bullets.   Well my first swap was WWs for jacket bullets. :P  Anyway, I will be headed back to the gunshop with more WWs in a few weeks and the next time I will try and stay on message.  FWIW, adult ADD sure makes like more interesting, never know what will happen next. ;)
