Daisy 880 .177 & possums
« on: May 01, 2011, 06:02:52 AM »
Every once awhile a possum will set up house in my yard and worry about my grandchildren.
Will the 880 at 10 pumps and a .177 pointed pellet at about 10 steps do the job with a head shot?
All advice welcome.

not enough info to say for sure, but if you can get that close, an axe would eliminate all guess work.  Suprisingly enough an opposum is very strudy.  Dense muscle structure, dense coat, and thick skin, similar to a cat.

As a test, get a bar of Ivory soap, and an empty drink can (aluminum)  fill the can with water, set can up at a safe place to shoot.  Place the bar of Ivory soap about one inch in front of the can.  Shoot through the bar of soap and into the can of water.  If you can shoot through BOTH with the same shot (and I mean a complete shoot through ) from the distance you will shoot the opposum then if you aim at the nape of the neck, or through the ear canal, you will have a chance of ridding your yard of the invader.

without chronograph data and exact bullet weights this is my best guess

Yes, the 880 will do it, but an ax handle, baseball bat, mag-lite d-cell are all proven tools. ;)

crosman pointed pellets are best for that(there very hard and go very deep). I killed a racoon at 15 yards with my 766 with them but i shot thought the eye and i was  a very good shot 8). why do you need to kill a possum anyways there harmless?

also if you can get that close then a slingshot would be a better tool for the job(i have killed many racoons with 38cal steel shot with mine). You would get any blood all over you if you use it.
