How much maintance on a 45-70?

Have a quick question about what can go wrong with the BC.   I know our moderator, "quickdtoo" knows.    I have had the BC for about 2 years and only shoot "targets and/or silhouettes" out to 300 yds, with 1300fps.   In this 2 years, I have had the firing pin go then the  hammer spring and now it's in the hospital with a broken transer bar.  What should I look for next?     beng

There ain't really much else in there that can break. I'd say you should be good to go now. ;)

Wow- sounds like you had a run of bad luck. Hope you get it turned around and start to play more and fix less. I have not heard of that many things all going on one gun. I will be more thankful every time mine go bang from now on. I never rip into the guts of my recievers but if I had to take it in that often I think I would figure out how to repair it to save $. Good luck, with it after this fix.  thejanitor

I'm going to take a guess here, tell me how right it is.
You started to experience FTF, firing pin replaced.
Seemed OK for a bit, but then More FTFs, mainspring replaced.
Now the Transfer Bar, which I think was the culprit in the first place.
With the sequence you have gone through we wont ever know.
You are probably good to go unless you are like me. I have car trouble and they tell me they've never seen that happen before.

I have the same issue with my 45-120 BC.  I measured the F Pin and ruled it out.  Installed the Wolff xpower hammer spring, better but did not completely fix the FTFs.  The lifter/striker (replacement model from Numrich) is in the mail as we speak.  My problem is also compounded by thin headed Norma brass and a too deep rim cut, courtesy of Wesson & Harrington, I didn't touch it with the reamer. (thats' my story and I'm stickin' too it!) 

FWIW, I have a dozen Handis, SB1s & SB2 and this is the only one that has been a problem.  I think once you get your new lifter/striker you should be good to go.    Good luck with your gun and let us know how it resolves.

I've never had any problems with any of the H&Rs below my signature, and I'm sure there has been thousands of rounds through them.

Again, being old and lazy, I'd just put it on another frame and save the old one for parts.

You get to use a hammer when you take the receiver apart.  IMO, nothing more fun than whacking on something with a mallet. ::)

Sorry for your problems with the rifle.
I just wanted to comment. These problems you have experienced while do happen are not "normal operation" of this or any other Handi rifle.
Yes sure problems occur and with the experience developed here we can usually pin point it quickly. But " normal" is opening the box and heading to the range for many many fun trouble free shooting experiences.

Like many guys here, I have many handis that have provided many years and thousands of rounds of trouble free operation. One thing that I will say is normal is weak main springs. Reciently they came out with a newly designed transfer bar. I suspect this will cure the other "problem" where people do not fully or completely pull the trigger resulting in FTFs.
We know the addition of the heavier spring, proper trigger operation and tweaking the firing pin protrusion helps in overall reliability of the firearm. Not at all unlike what a dangerous game rifle might get by a gunsmith before a safari. Or what a personal protection side arm getting a "tuneup" for 100%+ reliability. Kinda improving on the design thru experience using it.

We see allot of the issues here because people in general complain about problems and do not exclaim when they work properly after all we buy something with the complete expectation of proper operation.
