30 herrett barrel will not fire at times
« on: April 23, 2011, 01:17:51 PM »
I just received a used in great condition 10" 30 Herrett barrel and went to the range with 10 rounds. 4 of the ten would not fire without the action being opened and closed 2-3 times.
I have never encountered this issue with my 223 or 17 rem barrels. All three are T/C barrels although the 223 and 17 are 14".

Thank you
Phil

I would say you or whom ever formed the cases moved the shoulder back and its a head space issue...

CW,
Thank you for the input, this did come with 70 cases fire-formed, and I did run the 10 that I loaded through the sizing die. I will load a few more watchign the sizer set up and see what happens.
I did not see any pressure signs using 21gr 4227-125gr HP.

Thank you
Phil

You may also want to clean and polish the locking bolts (often called lugs) as they can cause this also.
There are threads in the stickies that describe how.

If you must close the action vigorously to get the cartridge to fire I would submit that the cases are likely too long to the shoulder. Size an empty case until the action will just close on it. Also, make sure your overall length is not excessive. Pinching the case mouth is not good. Try a few with only the primer if you are still in doubt.

I wish to thank everyone for their response as I hope I found the problem which maybe 2 fold:
1 Lugs needed lube
2 Incorrect sizer position on my press.

I have corrected and will try later this week.

With my 30 herrett I took a cigarette lighter and sooted up the neck-shoulder area of the case and kepy screwing the dies in a little at a time till it just touches the shoulder on a fire formed case.
