Ark For Sale?
« on: April 25, 2011, 06:06:18 PM »
Ok folks, help me out here. I'm in desperate need of an ark!  ;) I'd consider trading one rather onery 1 year old Boxer who is at the moment giving me the evil eye because he hates getting his feet wet and needs to go outside. He seems to think all this rain is my fault. Yeah, I'm 1/2 Cherokee but I never learned to dance!  ;D Any how, it's been raining fairly steady for the last several days. I'm not talking a nice gentle rain. I'm talking torential downpours! More rapid fire lightning strikes than anyone can remember and some pretty heavy winds. As most of you probably know a tornado tore up Lambert Airport in St. Louis. Lightning knocked out our power earlier and we just got it back on a few minutes ago. The ground is saturated and rain is still forecast for several more days. In Harrison, Ark. just 35 miles south of me, and where my son lives, the entire south half of the town is flooded. My pond is now a pretty good sized lake and the one road in and out is covered with water several inches deep and getting deeper. The "Wet Weather" creeks are white water rapids. I could probably go fishing in my yard and I live a third of the way up a mountain! Soooooo, me thinks an ark might just be in order! That or a submarine! Dang folks, help a guy out. I never learned how to swim! LOL

It's strange how Momma Nature works. My part of the world is in "extreme drouth". Just to the east Texas is saying this is their driest year since 1895. It's a toss up whether we are going to blow away or burn up first. There was an article in last week's paper lamenting the fact that we have had 83,000 acres lost to fire in Lea County this year. We lost 25,000 more acres yesterday and the wind is supposed to be worse today. It blew 51 mph here yesterday and the forecast is for 10 mph more today and even higher a little way north of here.

The acres numbers aren't as bad as they sound. Three years ago we lost 118,000 acres one Sunday and a couple of weeks later 34,000 more went up in smoke. Makes me want to crawl in a hole and pull the top in as my mother used to say on really nasty days.

Spirithawk, we here in the Ohio valley can sympathize.  Just saw a pair of giraffes walking back the road and wondered where they were going.  I'm happy to be on high ground.  Last summer we endured the worst drought here in southern Indiana in many a year and now we're making up for it.  Torrential downpours, lightning, and high winds abound.  I don't mind much other than the tornadoes and we have more of them scheduled for tonight and tomorrow.  Wish us luck.  We'd be happy to share with the drier parts of the country but don't know how to make it happen.

WE've had better than 5 inches in a week with 3-6 more in forecast thru Wed. Entire towns are under water with thousands of evacuations. The Ohio river is way out of it's banks. A dam at lake Jericho is in danger of collapsing and everyone below evacuated. We are on high ground here, but a lot of folks have been flooded out or are locked in by floodwaters.

I've been watching all that rain blow up thru Texas, then SE Okla. right across you.
I was wondering how you were doing.
Stay on the high ground brother.

Up until this last batch of rain we've been under the worst drought since the dustbowl days here in OK.
We picked up about 2.5 inches in the last week and a half.
Our ponds were getting really close to being sandboxes.

They keep telling us we are going to get rain, Yea Right.  There is a reason we are classified as ARID.  Sun is shinning again today.  Oh we have flooding here, but it is the same time and same place every year, when the snow melts.

I feel for you guys down there in that rain, one of the reasons I elected not to retire there.  Remember seeing my Grandfather being struck by lightning.  Decided right then and there I did not like it one bit.

As for you guys in Texas, know how you feel too.  We have millions of acres burn every year.  Most of it out in remote locations, but the smoke is bad here in town.  Often getting to the point some folks have to leave and go south.

As they say, "Watch Out For Mother Nature".

Don't think I would want to live anywhere along the Mississippi with all that rain and the snow melt coming.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.
