Which shoulder holster?
« on: February 18, 2011, 05:49:42 PM »
It's never too early to start thinking about next year's hunting season.  ;D I plan on carrying an iron sighted S&W 686 with a 4" barrel.  If I use a hip holster, my coat will cover the gun. Wearing the hip holster on the outside of my coat restricts access to my pockets. So I'm thinking about a shoulder holster that I can wear on the outside of my coat. Any recommendations for a shoulder holster for this type of gun in a hunting situation?

I use the bandolier type so I dont need to keep adjusting because of the clothing as opposed to the suspender type.

Check out the websites of Mike Barranti & also Rob Leahy at Simply Rugged, both make excellent leather. I have 9 Barranti rigs & 6 made by Simply Rugged.

another vote for the bandolier. i've got one for my contender. it's not exactly a "shoulder" holster, but its the best i've found for larger guns.

Thanks, never imagined there were so many options out there. I have a couple Simply Rugged holsters, love 'em. Mike Barranti is in Pittsburgh too, be nice to deal with a local guy.

Galco makes a nice holster like you might want to use. It places the revolver across the chest. It can be adjusted so the butt is about center chest for a good draw. It slips on and off easy It holds gun well also.
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

I went with the Simply Rugged Chesty Puller. I have the Simply Rugged Holsters for two other guns and really like them, so figured I'd just stick with what I know. Also have the advantage of carrying the other two holsters in the Chesty if needed.

I got a concealed carry permit expressly so I could carry my sixgun under my coat when hunting or fishing, I don't carry in ordinary every day activities. But then the Colorado DOW got their nickers in a twist over the concealed carry law and said they wouldn't recognize it. The state legislature said "Oh yes you will" so the DOW said "OK, then we won't prosecute anyone for concealed carry with or without a permit". So that makes my permit rather superfluous but who can predict the childishness of bureaucrats.

Here is the one I have.

+1 on this rig - it has carried my Ruger SRH for over a decade now in comfort and function.

Thanks Temmi,

But I have to say, compared to Simply Rugged I am.  I currently have a 4+ month lead time on all leather items.  It is a good problem to have but it also means I can not fit as many folks with items when they want them.

Oblabla has made sure that I can not afford to hire anyone at this time. >:(

For just over $100 you can have the Bandito set up. I have used this for 8 years and like it really well. Works great and is affordable.

For a S&W revolver, I really like this design.  I carry my 657 MT gun in it a lot.  The one thing that I'm not crazy about is that it uses a metal snap clip that can scratch a rifle stock.  But I find it real comfortable - MUCH more so than any belt holster.

I don't know about a shoulder holster in your situation but, why not try a chest holster?

These are very comfortable in all hunting situations I've personally tried them in.

I like a Bandeler cross draw holster . It is quick , comfortable, and distributes the weight on the shoulder and hip ( making the gun seem to be lighter) Hope this helps you.
