Hog Hunting at night rules in GA - I don't get it
« on: January 13, 2011, 05:04:26 AM »
I am going down to GA next month to do some hog hunting.  I am hoping the daytime hunting is good enough that I don't have to go out at night but I am going to make sure I am prepared if that is the only time they are moving.  Looking at the rules, if you don't have the feral hog control permit, you can only use a light that is attached to your head or body like you would coon hunting.  They don't allow lights attached to the gun or big spotlights but they do allow night vision scopes.  Why is a night vision scope ok but not a gun mounted light?  This confuses me.  Is the law just not up to date or is there some reasoning behind it?

I have a Kill Light XLR 250 which I can make work on a headband which technically should be ok since it is attached to my head.  I think.  Here is the rule out of the hunting regs.

PRIVATE LANDS No closed season; no limit. Feral hogs may be hunted at night with a light, which is carried on the person, affixed to helmet or hat, or part of a belt system worn by a hunter. No hunting over bait or from a vehicle.

I dunno...  :-\  Never really looked into it since I don't hunt at night.

But I'd be willing to bet it has something to do with our shineing (jacklighting) of deer problem.  Our Rangers spend a lot of time working on that type of thing.

If I remember, I'll see if I can find anything out.  But that's a mighty big if!   :-[

As a resident of GA and a HOG HATER and friend of several DNR officers I personally have never had a problem wth them bothering me with any sort of questions about what I was doing with a spotlight and a HIGH POWERED RIFLE in the middle of the night.

most of them as well as I say KILL 'EM ALLLL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and make a farmer HAPPY!

they are an invasive species and NOT, I repeat NOT, a "Game species"

I realize that most of the DNR officers look the other way but with my luck, I'd run into the one that doesn't.  Especially when it comes to hunting out of state, I have a tendency to be very cautious and follow the written rules to the letter.

There are several wrinkles even to the laws as published.  On Corp. of Engineer lands around the lake, you can only take hogs during another season, and with the weapons legal during that hunt.  For instance, legal deer weapons there are shotgun with slugs, or muzzle loader.  Small game is 22 rimfire, or shotgun with (I believe), #4 shot or smaller.  No hunting at night at all.

I asked a local DNR about hog hunting at night on private land,  and he said depending on where I was, he might arrest me for spotting deer.

Basically it would depend on the local officials, as some make their own laws as they go along.

hog rules are very lax, The way the rules are written,
even air rifles are legal. Would not Recommend it, but legal.
