Springfield Armory 45 ACP
« on: April 14, 2011, 10:31:48 AM »
Looking to purchase a Springfield Arms 1911 45ACP.  Any Pros or Cons on this gun?  It will be a present for a new Marine Officer, when he completes OCS.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

I'm currently carrying a SA Mil Spec 5" every day as my primary weapon. The only upgrades I've had done are a set of Trijicon night sights, extended combat thumb safety, flat non ILS mainspring housing and a Smith and Alexander (fitted) beavertail grip safety. Stock SA 7 round magazines work great, as do Federal's Tactical H.P. ammo. Close to 500 rounds and not a single failure to function of any kind. I used to carry a Series 70 Combat Commander, but have retired it after 20+ years as I don't want it to get any more worn. That pistol probably digested more than 5000 to 6000 rounds over the years. I think you'll be very happy with a Springfield Armory.

My Springfield GI is outstanding.  Springfield makes a great 1911.

My Springer 1911A1 is my choice over a colt, which I also have.  The next 1911A1 will be either a Kimber in 38 Super or a S&W Scandium 1911.

Don't overlook the new Ruger P1911. SS fullsize with Novak sights, commander style hammer, checkered flat backstrap, (steel) and a suggested retail of $799. Now we have another good choice in American made 1911s, Kimber, Ruger, and Remington (S&W?) . If I were in the market for another 1911 style pistol, I'd sure give the Ruger a look!

I have owned and shot a Springfield Armory 1911a1 for a few years now. I have
never had any problems with it. I have intentionally mixed mags with different
types of ammo without failure to feed or fire...ever. It could use better sights,
my only criticism. I will attend to that situation this winter.

Springfields are a quality product.  I shoot a  Mil-Spec in Wild Bunch Cowboy Action Shooting, and it is utterly reliable.

I have a 9mm Springfield XDM and it shoots and shoots and never hickups.  I also have a Colt 1911.  The Springfield is more accurate.

I must agree - that Ruger should have a street price around the $625 mark and appears to be a real competitor with the Springfield but at a much lower price.  You can't go wrong with either pistol.

I had a Springfield, a stainless no frills 1911, full size.  Dumbest thing I ever did was sell that gun.  It ran perfectly from the first day.  After owning lots of 1911's over my many years of shooting (Colts and Kimbers mostly), I found that the only one that ever ran flawlessly out of the box and with good accuracy was the 5" Springfield.

I'm getting another one ASAP.  I've concluded that if one sticks with a basic platform (like the thing was designed to be), it will serve well.  The older I get the more I realize that tiny groups from super-tight 1911's are not what make them special.  Neither do I need night sights or even adjustable sights.  A 5" 1911 is the best defensive handgun on the planet, and 'tis my useless opinion that upgrades like skelitized triggers and extended mag releases and ambidexterous safeties and beveled magazine wells and different springs will save your hide.  A full size Springfield works as is out of the box.  When a manufacturer or individual starts messing with shortened barrel and slide and tight tolerances, they are risking fixing something that ain't broke, but will be broke once the fixes are in place.

I hate to admit what I paid for my last 4" Kimber.  It had it all.  Groups were under 3" at 50 yards.  BUT, it jammed.  Not often, but too much.  Even after the recommended break-in time, I'd get a jam about once out of every 3 clips.  Also, it would not feed 230 grn. hardball.  Whoever heard of a 1911 that wouldn't feed hardball?  It demanded 185 grain ammo, which have a shorter ocl.  But even so, whether the magazines were Kimber, McCormick or Wilson, that one in 3 clips would not go away.   I shot the thing enough that the mainspring had to be replaced, according to the manual.  Still, the jams were there.

I sold it and bought a Ruger SR9c, which has never jammed with any ammo.  Yet, it's still just a 9mm, and I can't live with a 9mm as my main carry gun.  I gettin' a 5" Springfield.

On this same topic, what about the range officer?  It gets quite a bit of advertising from Springfield, and looks pretty nice for the price at around $800.   Anybody have one and like it?  I am also interested in the no frills, 5" 1911 for accurate shooting, good handling and the ability to carry concealed as well.  Everybody at the gun shop wants to sell you an XD compact when you mention carrying, but I like the heavier pistols.

Something to consider between the SA & the ruger 1911;

Springfield Armory 1911a1 forged frame and slide  (45acp) I give forging a +++

Ruger SR1911 investment cast frame and forged slide  (45acp)

For an awesome pistol in 9mm luger the CZ75/ CZ85 i believe is unmatched in its quality and class.  I have never seen any of my CZ's jamm or stove pipe.  The CZ75 is the choice of the russian spec ops.

BTW;
Food for thought with my 9mm CZ85DB using 3' of kentucky windage i can hit small rocks on the berm at 100yds. With me knowing this ahead of time there was a kid with an AR15 who was trying to hit a piece of paper on the ground  at 100yds while i was throwing it all around with my 9mm pistol.  I think its food in the bank on knowing how much kentucky windage to use for a long shot.

I think the Ruger looks good, but I got my eye on a Springfield Operator.  And I agree that the the overall quality of the Spingfield should be a bit better than the Ruger.  But the Ruger fills a nice niche in the market.

I have been using a Springfield Mil-Spec since 2002, no complaints, it shoots where the sights are and even more important, it shoots.

I was at the NRA Convention yesterday.  One of my primary goals was to check out 1911's.  I decided on the Springfield Range Officer.  Quality finish, sweet trigger, fully adjustable sights.  It was love at first sight!  it might be a few bucks more that the Ruger (maybe $50?), but I just liked it more.  I'm going to start to get prices nest week.

On prices for the Range Officer, Cabelas has them for $829 - not sure how that compares with the local shops if they can get them, but that is what Cabelas told me.  The Ruger's I believe are in the $799 range, and the guy at Cabelas told me that he had not even seen one yet.  "Allocated" is all you see when trying to order one.  I have a RO waiting for me.....just need to make a run to Cabelas!

Looking to purchase a Springfield Arms 1911 45ACP.  Any Pros or Cons on this gun?  It will be a present for a new Marine Officer, when he completes OCS.

These are my 2 Springfield Armory 1911's. One is a Trophy Match, and the other is a 1911 "Loaded" Model. Both are Stainless with the "Loaded" Model having Black Teflon accents. Both are flawless, good looking, accurate weapons. I don't think you can go wrong with a Springfield 1911. They are very well made weapons with a lot of attention paid to detail. Both run like scalded dogs. Bill T.
