Paperless?
« on: April 10, 2011, 04:03:51 PM »
I try to help the NRA - I do help the NRA - but now they are asking me to get my American Rifleman online.  I am sure it will save a significant piece of change, but I already spend too much time on the computer, as Greybeard readers are no doubt aware.  Looking up at the screen aggravates a bad disc in my neck.  What is everyone else doing?

I think I clicked on something somewhere that will continue my magazine.
I like a book better than the internet.

Don't recall being asked to go paperless but if they do I won't.

Thanks for the replies.  It's probably coming.  I live near an urban area so maybe they are starting with us.  I think I've been asked twice now via email.  Maybe that's the angle.  They got my email and update me on various stuff, maybe if they don't have your email they wont ask.

Alot of magazines are pushing people towards digital as it is cheaper for them in the long run.  Many I know now have ipads, kindles and smartphones are finding it easier to get them that way, then they can access them whenever they have a free moment.  I haven't jumped at it yet, but as soon as I get an ipad or similar device I probably will.  I have seen the digital mag and it is cool, everything in the article is linked, so if you see something that interests you, you can click on it and get more information.

You might try an e-reader like an Amazon Kindle.  It's small like a book/magazine so you can tote it around, and the screen uses a technology called "electronic ink" (the concept is similar to, but much more advanced than, the process used by the Etch-a-sketch toys).  The result is that the screen looks much more like paper than a digital screen.  It also only burns power to "redraw" the screen - takes nothing to maintain an image once it's drawn.  As a result you get 3-4 weeks of usage on a single charge of the battery.

I told them I didn't want a digital American Rifleman!  My magazine gets passed around to a few other like minded, semi auto carrying, God fearing, straight shooting, fearless, old battery powered hermits like me, even if I sometimes do have to read it by kerosene lamp.   ;D
