WHAT I AM DISCOVERING
« on: March 27, 2011, 08:26:51 AM »
Belly laughs are expected.
I am discovering that I like revolvers--even better than I may have thought several Month's ago. I am also discovering that I am not just a blatant, like every revolver kinda guy. I still have my preferences.
I do still like and favor semi-autos for many things. I like heavy guns, guns that fill my hands, best--even, and always in Semi's.
So far I have discovered that the "N" frames suit me to a T. The model 28, in particular.
The 586 and model 22 are good 'uns. I just wish I could get them in the larger(heavier) model 28 N frame package.
I have discovered that i have no more use for the Scandium model under my mattress. That one is gonna go along with one of my .327mag smiths ( I just don't need two and my daughter is trying to take the model 28 from me as I speak.)
I have handled the Rugers and I don't care for them on a number of levels.
Blessings

;D Nice to hear you are finding new things in the shooting world..I visited with a pal and his wife in Rock Springs for a few days..and he carries mostly autos due to issues with some of his businesses..while I considered picking up a Springfield xd in 45 auto at the gunshow there, I decided I am most comfortable day to day with a revolver..my little Smith 3" goes along about everywhere, but for other things the heavy Smiths get the nod..on our trips to the hills, I had both my Mountain gun in .44 and my model 28 357 both were 4" models..I like them for most of my shooting and often carry them for protection..enjoy......

I'd like to have a Model 28 rechambered to .44 Special.  I love Ruger single actions but I don't care for their double actions at all.

I would like one chambered in .44/40 just to have something a little different. And I wish Smith would also offer that "working man's" finish on the 28's again. That matte blue finish grew on me quickly.

The N frame was but it got different numbers , IE; 29 , 24 , 25 , 629 etc.
Shame you don't like Ruger DA's They are fine revolvers and strong to a fault , reason for so many custom gun projects .
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

Wm,
If you get the chance to fire one, you might want to try a Dan Wesson as well.  I've never looked close at them until I traded for one the other day, a 4" 357.  It has the best double action of any revolver I've shot.  The Smith's are great guns, but their kin made a good one too!  Especially if you like them heavy.

I like revolvers also.  That's all I own.

As has been asnswered earlier, the Model 28 was only offered in 357 Magnum.  Other chamberings got their own number.  And S&W did offer one Model (number forgotten but named something like Wagon Train) cut for the 44 WCF.

What chambering were you considering?  My 28 was reworked to handle the 45 ACP and I know of several others redone to 44 Special, 45 long Colt, and similar.

I love the 625 Mountain Gun in .45ACP and .45 Colt.

Actually I will get another model 28 before anything else. I would like a 5" barrel but i don't know that they made one. might get a 6" and have it cut---but I would be happy with a 4'. to replace the one my daughter is going to steal. :D

William:  the 28 only came in 357 in 4 or 6" barrels, but the Model 27, also 357 only, came in 3.5, 3.75, 4, 5, 6, 6.5 and 8 barrels, I believe.  Although I would most likely not hesitate to jump if I saw another nice 4" 28.

I have tried quite a few autos and have only kept a couple 22s, and one of those because it was my dad's. I guess if you want a gun that has only one use an auto will work, but I like the 6 shooters best because of their versatility. The saying "Fear the man who only one gun because he probably knows how to use it", applies here. Use one gun for everything from rabbit hunting to shooting prairie dogs at long range and you will learn how to use it.

One cannot own enough hand filling, voluptuous S&W N, L, K Frame revolvers,  plus larger Colt Revolvers too!.....357 is a great caliber, and so useful in it's double duty.

N Frames Smiths are the cat's meow, size-wise, and the .41 magnum caliber fills the gap between 44 mag and 357 nicely.

I have a few Ruger revolvers, (DA & SA) to go along with the Smiths & Colts, but they've been worked over and slicked up, and re-stocked to feel more like a Smith or Colt.

I recently picked up a new in the box, 1986 mfg date S&W model 41 with 5.5" bbl.
It's a beaut, and will complement My Colt Gold Cup, nicely.

Mostly, I'm a revolver guy, but I do carry small autos CCW for personal protection, due to extreme conceal-ability.

My preference for Smith revolvers has run over 35 years now.  With but one exception:   Years ago when I was infatuated with .44's loaded HOT, I grew tired of having to get my .44's re-timed every thousand rounds or so, tried a Ruger Redhawk and never regreted it.  Until my wrists got to the point I couldn't handle magnums any longer, that Redhawk was fed a steady diet of my "bear killers" for 15 years, NEVER had it worked on once.

The Smith N-frames to me are THE quintessential revolver. Namely blued, square butt, standard profile barreled(heavier mag version included). 4 and 5 inch are my favorites- though I have only one 5", a Model 27. Would love to see a 5" M24 produced, and would love to find (but probably couldnt afford) a five inch M29. While I tend to look for my "Ns" in the used gun section, the recent "Classics" have also followed me home. A 4 inch Model 29 is a firearm that has NO peers. IMHO :)

Oh, yes the N frame barrell profile does have sex appeal. That's how the 27's and 28's for example makes their "looks".
