Korean Arrow Cannons
« on: May 05, 2011, 05:46:35 PM »
Koreans have been using artillery for centuries.  Some of their first shot arrow-like projectiles (which look like telephone poles with fins).

However, one hand-held model looked rather painful

The earliest European cannon also fired arrows. The Royal Armouries in the UK even reproduced one, interpreted from old prints, & experimented with it using various dart configurations etc.

here is a picture of the Loshult cannon , approximately from 1326 or so
its a vase shaped barrel and most probably the absolutely first model of cannon
there is an picture in an old manuscript dated 1326 of an very similar piece firing an arrow
thats how they dated it, I got that picture somewhere but I cant find it now  :-[
hope someone can post it here
its the only known existing vase cannon today
they made a copy at the middle age center in Denmark and did some experimental shooting with that one also

RIP John. While on vacation July 4th 2013 in northern Wisconsin, he was ATVing with family and pulled ahead of everyone and took off at break-neck speed without a helmet. He lost control.....hit a tree....and the tree won.  He died instantly.

The one thing that you can almost always rely on research leading to, is more research.

Due to the drawings and the relationship between the cannon and the people I have always thought it was much bigger ! :o

That thing is tiny !

I think the guys standing next to the target may also be good candidates for a Darwin award.

That footage of the guy holding the small cannon was an outtake from a video made by Korea's defense information dept.  The video has a clip where he shoots it and doesn't lose control (I'm going to guess a smaller charge was used).  The guys in the video, as far as I know, were active military, so they should have known better.

That fits the category: It seemed like a good idea at the time.....
