Hammock recommendation anyone?
« on: March 13, 2011, 03:49:17 AM »
I have been considering a sleeping hammock for few weeks. We are gonna do the PMT in west Ga on 25th.  I m hoping to build up to doing the (some) AT late this fall. Been looking at Clark Jungle & North American & Hennessey deep jungle. However, with the price of these exceeding $300 im concerned if i dont like hammock sleeping i will have wasted nice sum cash. Id like to find a used one or another one that will suffice for few months til i can decide how to camp, tent/hammock.  I appreciate any suggestions . :-\
I am a Southerner, if i were born in the north, east or west id be just another human being!

I have an Eagles Nest hammock with rain fly, bug net, and tree straps.  I got it off the internet a few years ago for less than $200.  It is very comfortable and everything rolls up into a bag about 16" long by about 8" in diameter.  Weighs about 4 lbs.  It beats a tent.  More comfortable than sleeping on the ground.  Haven't used it in winter.  Cool in summer.  I got the wide one for double occupancy.

Last year I purchased a Hennessy Expediton Asym from the Hennessy website for $139 (I think). I only made it out for one 2 night trip but found it very comfortable to sleep in. The tree hugger straps are a bit short for the big douglas fir trees I usually enconter so I purchased longer straps. I also sent mine off to have a zipper added for an alternate entry, this was right before Hennessy began offering their Expedition Asym Zip model.
I recommend a trip over to hammockforums.net for lots of informational and entertaining reading and viewing.  :)

I have a mil surp hammock that I picked up for $15.00, and a big bug net I got for $5.00 at a surplus store.  Both have served me well.

Check tedsmilitarysurplus.com, they have milsurp jungle hammocks with bug net and rain fly built in for  $39.95.  I used one for years, sure beats a tent as long as you have somewhere to hang it.

If you like to sleep on your stomack or sides look at the bridge hammock. It used to be a make your own but now I think they are offered by hennesee.
