New 7.62x39 carbine
« on: April 16, 2011, 06:08:05 PM »
Well I purchased a new to me 7.62x39 carbine last week and I have to say it is one of the nicest little rifles that I have ever shot !!! Very good accuracy , pleasant to shoot , and amazing performance out of that little cartridge !! My questions are is there any other clips available as it seames a little awkward to Carry with the large clip at midpoint , and what ammo are you guys using for whitetail size animals? I do hand load so any tips would be appreciated as bolt gun info is hard to find... Thanks  Mark

There's at least one gunsmith out there (sorry, don't have a link) who modifies the front of the trigger guard and shortens the mag to 3 rounds for a flush fit. IIRC, he does the mod for $150.

I looked into it but decided to go with a 527 American M1 in 223 (flush fit 3 round mag from the factory) instead.

Roy Bertalotto at RVB Precision did the job on my .223, and it turned out really great. Reasonable price ( I had him cut down 2 magazines ), and it really improved the looks and carry=ability of the little 527. I think he can be reached at rvb100@comcast.net.
All you do is send him the mag & the bottom metal, no need to send the entire action.
Absolutely impressed with his work.

I loved my 527 in 7.62x39.   Like you the only I didnt like was the mag sticking out the bottom.  That gun was way more accurrate than Ill ever be.  Then I moved out west and sold it cause I decided I needed something bigger cause I want to hunt elk someday.

Welcome to the club. I "Americanized" my 7.62x39 carbine by putting it into a CZ AMercian stock [that CZ went into a Kevlar Varmint stock when I rebarreled it] and turned off the rear sight 'knot' in my lathe.
I was thinking I'd rebarrel it to Grendel or something but then it shot so well "as is" that I'm going to happily keep it in 7.62x39~!
I've shot whitetail with an SKS and feel the 7.62x39 is totally sufficient for deer. My doe was taken at 135 yards and bullet performance was excellent.
Shown here is my 7.62x39 "American" in the walnut stock that came off my .221 Fireball. The scope is just for ammo load testing, and I've got a fixed 4X and a 2.5x-8X, both Leupods to go on it for 'field duty'. One thing about a 7.62x39, you can always find ammo and components! I load both .308" and .310" bullets for excellent accuracy. I dialed in/recrowned this barrel while I had it out of the action and in the lathe, just because.
A note: I test fired several CZ Carbines in 7.62x39 for a friend that owns a custom rifle shop. They were going to be rebarreled and we wanted to know how the factory barrels would shoot. They all easily gave 1.5" groups at 100 yards. Good enough to be worth researching a load with premium bullets. I have some Vmaxes in .310" that I've yet to test, maybe one day.....

James Calhoon makes a nifty single shot adapter to replace the magazine. It sits flush on the bottom and works well. Just drop a round in and close the bolt.

Just out of curiosity, I examined a 527 American M1 (3 round mag) along side of a a 'regular' 527 (5 round). It appears that all CZ did to make the M1 version fit the 3 round was mill the two little triangular areas off of the trigger guard to allow for the shorter mag. 5 round mags still fit; my M1 came with both 3 and 5 round mags.

Same thing could easily be accomplished with some careful filing and finishing to remove the extra metal, and a 3 round mag could be ordered directly from CZ for any of the 223 rifles.

My new CZ 527 in 7.62x39 has become my favorite weapon.  For such a light, handy thing it shoots extremely well.  A maximum charge of Reloader 7 and a 123 gr Hornady SP will average .5" 3 shot groups at 100 yards.

My Leupold 2.5x8 scope has the Boone & Crockett cross hairs.  When the top one is on at 100 yards the second one is on at 200 [at 8x].  I haven't used the third, fourth or fith aim points yet.

Don't throw away your 5 shot magazine yet.  CZ's magazines are quite sturdy.  When shooting offhand, I find that nesting the magazine in the palm of my hand, allowing my elbow to rest against my ribs helps my shooting.  The little CZ really holds it's own against standard "deer rifles" in the shooting department.  That ugly magazine becomes beautiful.  At first it seems in the way of carrying the piece.  However, once the little carbine is scoped, the magazine actually aids in carrying.  You wee, as I mentioned it is quite sturdy.  I place the "bad finger" of my left hand at the jusction of the front of the magazine and the stock.  My thumb goes between the scope and the rifle bolt.  The little carbine rides this way like a pistol.

It is so neat that someone makes a bolt action rifle that fits the smaller cartridges.  Having the CZ 527 sure beats having a rifle where someone adapded a 308 length action to a 223 or 7.62x39.

Enjoy your new prize!
