243 85gr Sierra gameking load
« on: May 04, 2011, 02:49:23 PM »
Anyone out there have any load data using H4895 with the 85gr Sierra Gameking? I can't seem to find any, Sierra doesn't list it and Hodgdon shows it with a 80 or 90gr and the 85gr Barnes, but not a standard 85gr. I have H4895 and H4350 on hand to use, and was thinking of getting some IMR4064 to try, any thoughts?

you have a 80 and 90 gr bullet to work a load for it's not that hard to finger one out, if nothing else start with the 90gr and work up.
Remember it's where the first bullet goes out of a cold barrel that counts most.

I just re-checked and found Sierra's H4895 data, and I figured on using under the 90gr max as a start, but just wanted to see if anyone had any combos that work good in general, sorta like H4831 and the 270.

I don't know about now but years back a couple of friends swore by 37.0gr of 4895 and the 85HPBT.

Your 4895 should be fine for that bullet weight. I used Reloader 15 with 85 grain GK's in the 243, any of the 'medium' or so burn rate powders with data should work.

Your idea of 4064 is valid .been  working up a load with that bullet my self.So far my best results have been with 4064 and varget with a slight edge going to the varget.

The first deer I killed using handloads n my 243 was with the 85gr Sierras on top of IMR4350. 4895, 4064 and 4831 are all good choices. It just depends on which one your rifle prefers.
