357 Maxi dies
« on: May 09, 2011, 11:35:35 AM »
Aloha,

I just sent a receiver back for a 357 mag barrel which I will ream out to Maxi. It will be based on the BC carbine. To keep the period theme I will be installing a Wm Malcolm (Leatherwood clone) 3X.

Has anyone used a Lyman 38/357 mag 310 tool to reload the Maxi? A 7/8 by 14 die set will not fill the spirit of this build.

Thank you,
Honolulu.

Inquiring minds would also like to know if we can use 45 long colt, Lyman 310 dies for 454 Casull reloading?

I use the deluxe Lee Carbide Set for .38s, mags and Maxis and it works fine.....and my little Handi likes what I make.  It too is on a BC Carbine stock set.

Put question about 357 maxi and 454 Casull on 'Cast Bollits' forum last night.  Got answer:

"The answer to both your questions is a qualified "yes". Since each of those cartridges are only longer versions of the basic cartridge with identical base, mouth, and crimp dimensions. You might have to switch to a large handle to allow unscrewing the dies enough to work with the longer cartridges. "

I guess we can...

The old Lee 'hand pounder' 357M set would work too, I think, and is very like some of the vintage reloading sets from the 'buff hunt' era.

the 310 tool only sizes the mouth of the case ( even on stright wall case )so it would seem 38 spl. dies could work.
If ya can see it ya can hit it !
