I love my single action!
« on: May 20, 2011, 11:49:43 AM »
Ah, the single action handgun...
There is nothing quite like it.

A Glock is a tool, and looks like a tool
and with it's black finish, it looks all business.

The 1911 is more classic, polished blue
and wood, and while iconic, it is still
angular and straight.

A double action is a fine handgun,
And while useful and fast to reload, it is still
somewhat angular, and just whose hands do
those big grips fit anyway?

Enter the single action, first of the breed
and still the best.  It is a friend, a trusted companion
you can ride the river with.  It is a comfort on my hip.

The natural feel of it and the way it fits into my hand
as I slide my palm onto it and thumb the hammer back.
The way it points and how the sights fall naturally into line.
The roll of it in recoil, offering the hammer to me for the next shot.

And who styled it?  Someone in love with natural
curves and shapes.  Almost certainly someone who
loves women and wanted all the grace and beauty
of that creature to be mirrored in this gun.
It's natural curves hold our hearts as we look at it.

You can spend time in the outdoors with any gun you choose.
Me? My first choice will always be a single action.
I can find no better friend and companion.  One ready
and willing whether the job is serious or just busting rocks!

I find no better comfort than my single action on my hip,
when I pause to survey my domain while resting my hand on it's grip
as John Wayne did so often. It just feels right
And I guess if' it was good enough for John Wayne, it is good enough for me.

You are never too old to have a happy childhood!

got to agree. A couple single actions in the right calibers and a good 1911 and I could be content for life.

I know what you mean Lloyd!  We think we want to try all these new toys that come out, but what we really need is just more time enjoying the one's we have!  44 Man.

My first handgun was a S&W 38 sp.{bought in a neighboring state while I was in high school}. I reloaded and even cast my own bullets so I shot it a lot. But it never became an instinctive pointer for me, I can never recall having hit a running animal with it and I shot at a lot of them. Then I got my hands on a single action and the world changed. Right away I could hit a running rabbit. Not every time for sure, but it happened.

You can make thousands of everyday shots and a week later you have forgotten, but the times you make those almost unbelievable shots are locked in memory. I have a new 357 blackhawk with a 6" barrel these days and I sure wish I had tried out the longer bbls a long time ago. Memories of that gun include nocking the heads off two grouse with 3 shots shooting offhand at 20 to 25 yds. Or hitting a prairie dog at 63 yds and then hitting another at 67 the same day. I still have good DA sixshooters, I carried one for 20 years of law enforcement, but I think if I needed to take a handgun to a fight these days it would be a single action.

I love my single actions. Nothing else in the handgun world matches them in looks and feel. Gotta say I'm pretty fond of my 1911s also and I can stand to have a double action revolver close to me.

A Glock? They make me think of the line in the Bobby Bare song about the witch. "You're to damn ugly for a guy like me." I left "rich" out of the quote since it doesn't apply to me.  ;D

i only have one single action
but one is all i need
when i put my hand on my springer champion i always have to think of the condition the gun is in (round chambered?, cocked and locked? cocked and unlocked??)
but when i grab my old vaquero i know what the deal is
it is like an extention of my right hand
like an old buddy of mine used to say
gripping my vaquero is like shaking hands with an old friend
if i could only own one gun it would definately be my vaquero

Never put the shape of a single action and the female thing together. But your right! No wonder we can't stop finding beauty in them! It's only natural.

Bravo, Bravo, encore, .....gittin all misty here...

You almost have it Lloyd, just leave the 1911 at home...fine gun that it is, it just don't belong strapped on yer hip with a good horse under saddle...unless maybe you'd be one of those guys ridin in tennis shoes and a baseball cap.  :o  You don't strike me as that kind though....I like the Duke rig 44 Man, I use one similiar.

A good SA will bring back memories of hunts that were great, maybe not because you took a lot of game, but because you were there & really lived. The campfires, bumps in the night, wild places where it's been a long time since anyone but you were there. The feel of a good SA in your camp bed or alongside of it. The small chip out of the Ivory stock when you carelessly bumped up against that granite boulder as you overlooked the Deer trail, the Grouse frying the pan that you clipped the heads off of with your good old .44. The Colt SAA you carefully turn over in your hand, admiring it after having visited the Custer Battlefield & knowing it has ancestors that fought in that fight.
Ahhhh yes, I'll take a good SA anytime.

God did not give us the built in tools that he gave other creatures, but he gave us a brain. And my single has let me sleep soundly many, many nights along side a river or in the mountains well away from others.

As I go through the list of what I have had, and still have, there is a pattern. Some really otherwise good stuff is gone, and some are gone that I have had multiples of. The one's that have endured do have that connection with some history, both mine and before. These silly things arent just tools or utility for most of us it seems. They cover so much of mechanical engineering, art, aesthetics, etc. that the undeniable appeal is often beyond us.
