Long-Range Specialty Handgun for Bench and PD's
« on: April 10, 2011, 09:27:51 PM »
This is an Eric Wallace creation
Here is some sneak peek pics of my LR bench/pd specialty handgun.
It should track like a dream

XP:  that sure looks like a interesting set-up.  What are the specs on it - bbl length, caliber, load, etc.??

Barrel length is just under 18", 7mm WSM, H-1000, 180 grain JLK
Barrel is still being broke-in.
This is being set-up specifically for LR shooting from the bench and to be able to compete in 600 yard and 1k rifle matches in the LG class.
Eric built the stock and made the rails himself.

Wow!  What a incredible set-up.  I could get very lazy with a LR handgun like that - set it up, dial it in, and wait for Bambi to step into the line of fire.  You have got to post targets when you get it to group.

Will do.
If you were hunting prone in a wide open field with a SEB Rest that had F-Class feet on the elevation legs so they don't slip deep into the ground, it would make a deadly LR combination.
In reality it would be two heavy and bulky to carry very far.
But, since it is a switch barrel/switch stock specialty handgun, I can either leave the 7WSM barrel on and put the McRee stock on it.

Or put the 6.5 Leopard (WSM) barrel on it, and now I have a practical and accurate LR hunting rig.

597 yards on this mulie this past fall.  This is the same action, just a different stock and barrel.

Eric did some more shooting yesterday @ 300 yards and this is a 3-shot group with 168 JLK's.
Measured .512 center to center. 8)

Notice how little it recoils even with the 180 grain JLK with an 11 year old shooting it.

I'm curious about the asymmetrical forestock.  What is the reason for the offset to one side?

Thanks,
Curtis

Welcome.
That is another reason I have the McRee stock, is it allows this SP to be used in more ways than just bench shooting.

Hey Ernie,

Man I have been following you around for several years on this, that, or the other sight, and your creations and capabilities have always impressed the heck out of me. You definitely have what it takes to get the job done.

Keep up the good work, looks like your young pupil there has things well in hand.

41 Mag,
Thanks.
That is Eric Wallace's (gunsmith) son doing the shooting in the vid.
Eric is also the one who is doing the load development as well.
I do not yet have the handgun in my possession yet.

My son, Erik is almost 17, and he also shoots at distance as well.
To many people whose names begin with an "E" here ???

It is here now! :)
Spent time doing case prep for the 7mm WSM:
Opening the neck up slightly with the K&M Expandiron die, Cleaning up the necks with a K&M Neck turner, inside chamfering the the case lip, de-burring the flash hole and uniforming the flash hole, resizing the neck with a Redding comp bushing die to correct size. I will still need to uniform the primer pocket but I am almost done with these 200 cases.

Some better pics:

Actually, the gunsmith (Eric Wallace) did that.  1-shot and clean for 4-5 rounds, then 3-shots and clean.  Basically, you let the barrel tell you when to go to more rounds between cleaning.

This was a great service from Eric and one that he probably insisted on doing. Icing on the cake for sure.
