One Happy Camper Here.
« on: May 26, 2011, 08:15:32 PM »
My go to Deer and lope gun has been a 270 for the last 42 years but having a bum knee and just plane getting old has made me take longer shots like a Antelope in MT last year 482yds and another in WY at 608 so instead of buying another rifle like a 300 Rum I decided to see what my Savage 116 in 338 could do with 180gr Nosler Accubonds the wind just played havoc with my 130gr Nosler part. last season.

I started at 74grs and ended at 77grs one below max for RL-19, 74 and 75 grs were ok at best 76 got better and you tell me if 77 was any good 4 shots @ 100yds.

My next bullet in line to try is a Barnes 160gr will see!!!!

I like it!

Some things to know if you wish Barnes bullets to shoot well:

1.  Start with a VERY clean barrel.

2.  They like a little jump before hitting the lands.

3.  Push them hard.  They frequently don't do well with light loads though there are exceptions to this.

4.  I've found that crimping the TSX and Banded solids in the appropriate groove with a Lee Factory Crimp Die improves accuracy.  They're one of the few bullets I crimp routinely.

Thanks for the info on the Barnes.

I had tried them once before years back the blue ones in my 300WM 3"+ patterns not groups I went thru 50rds and no luck.

Will see about the 160 just maybe it sure would add some fps if they do shoot.
