Need info;H&R Springfield Stalker .58 caliber
« on: June 01, 2007, 02:30:23 AM »
Serial# AJ30399x, NIB condition and a very fine weapon.Loks like a cross between a cut down 1864 Springfield and an 1873 carbine.I'm espicially curiuos about the rifling pitch.Looks slow but not 1-78 slow.Any ideas of when and how long they were made and what they're worth?Any help appreciated.BTW, recoil with a Hornady Great Plains bullet ( 525 gr) and 70gr  Swiss 2f was...surprising.The Hornady bullet loads far to tightly  but gave a 2 inch 3 shot 50 yard" just get aquainted" group.Any info appreciated.

The J in the serial number denotes a 1972 build year.

;DYup that's my Stalker !Mine's NIB and has the original rear sight and telescoping rammer.Wonder who thought that was a good idea!Shot some 470gr Lee trashcans. Was sub 2 inches at 50 yards with 80 of PyroRS and am now in posession of a fine recoil hickey :o.The gun is a bit light for the caliber... ::) A 1 -56 looks about right and she'll most likely be accurate ( and less recoiling) with balls too.Thanks.

I know that this is an old thread but I thought I'd see if anyone else has a Springfield Stalker.  I recently got one in .45 caliber.  It looks like a well build rifle.  The ramrod thimble and ramrod are missing on mine.  I do, however, have one of those old telescoping H&R ramrods.  That has to be the worst ramrod ever made.  I wonder who came up with that idea?  I'm thinking about doing a little customizing on mine.  Thinking of fitting it nose cap, ramrod entry pipe, under-rib and a couple of thimbles.  I have an old Navy Arms Buffalo Hunter in .58 caliber.  It has those features.
There is not a heck of a lot of info out on these rifles.
If anyone has a .45 Stalker I would like to find out what loads & bullet/ball size you are using.
