Picking up Wheel Weights for Free

I'm new to the forum, but thought I'd share my trick for getting free wheel weights. It is somewhat time consuming, but I can get them for free pretty much any day of the week when its daylight out.

I found that there are lots of wheel weights at the end of freeway exit ramps. I am certainly not the first person to notice this, but I have found it can be very productive. This past weekend I had my biggest find of about 8lbs of wheel weights at the end of one exit ramp. The best part is that they are often 95% or more lead! Seldom do the steel and zinc wheel weights fall off like the lead ones do.

Now, I caution you that this is not true at all exit ramps. There are some exit ramps that are better "producers" than others. I'll share some of my observations with you later if you're interested.

And you are cleaning up all that nasty, 'hazardous' lead from the environment before any spotted owls have a chance to swoop down and swallow it.  The state should be giving you a medal along with all the metal.

  Joking aside, that's a good idea.  I never thought of it.  Just be careful.

I go to an area of railroad that has a bunch of crossings.  A  highway parrallels the track, so I go to each crossing and get plenty of weights.

This is one of the benefits of riding my bicycle almost everywhere I go. I find free lead almost every day!

i am always on the look out while jogging

the intersections closest  to a tire store are productive

also  as posted before....railroad tracks....especially near a tire store

i jog past 2 tire stores on  my run.....each parking lot is good for a 1/4 pound
[don't really want more while running......but its free]
