AR .22 Barrel
« on: May 30, 2011, 04:33:54 AM »
I am thinking of making a .22 AR.  Trying to build a cheap plinking gun.  I was curious who out there makes the most cost effective setup for this.  If I can get a complete upper even better.  Is there anything that is recommended for under $300?  I don't need a high end.  Like I said, just a plinking gun. Thanks.

A good friend is an AR fanatic and for plinking he uses a conversion unit. Don't know the brand but it installs in the upper and fills the chamber with a cartridge shaped barrel that escourts the bullet into the bore. We shot it a bit and accuracy was quite acceptable and function impeccable. The bore is oversize for the 22 LR but that's the same situation in a convertable revolver... I would check the internet and places like Cheaper-than-dirt for conversion units and prices.. Buy a spare mag as my luck is that the minute I buy something the maker folds and mags are impossible to get.. His rifle was a gas gun not the more popular today piston driven gun so the gas port wasn't a problem?? At least he never mentioned having any problems with the very dirty 22 LR's.. It's sure a bunch cheaper for drills and practice...

Do you know how much work is involved in the conversion process?

That sounds like a J. Arthur Ciener kit. We used them in boot camp (USAF) to train with. He's been making those for years and they do work well. Anymore it seems everybody is making a .22LR AR type rifle, I bet you won't have too much trouble finding what you want.
