TC renegade
« on: May 27, 2011, 11:20:43 AM »
What's the general feelings about the renegards, compared to other traditional MLs. I bought a renegade with a 56 smoothbore barrel. Haven't shot it yet due to my recent surgery. But I was thinking about picking up a 50 caliber barrel to go with it.

I also have a new englander with 12ga & 50 barrels. Anyone care to compare the new englander with the renegade ?

Thanks,

Pastorp,
Living in Alaska as you do, might consider for your extra barrel for your Renegade a .54 cal instead of the .50. Been awhile since I messed around with the barrels of the TC`s , maybe that the barrel width of the .54 might not match the Renegade. I have a 12 ga New Englander but no rifle barrrel. Back in the 80`s I bought my two sons each a Renegade in the 50 Cal configuration. My oldest son, who also lives in Alaska, has shot two caribou with his.
Other than the different styles of the New Englander vs the Renegade I think both are comparable, although for rifle hunting I would choose the Renegade.
The .56 cal smoothbore, essentially a .28 ga, should be a lot of fun on grouse, ptarmigan, and ducks!!
Lot`s of luck and keep us posted on your experince with this setup!!

The are very accurate but a little heavy.  The bigger the bore the lighter they are.  The .56 smooth bore barrels shoot both shot & patched round balls quite well.

The .50 Renegade barresl and the .54 Hawken barrels  will fit your gun.

to oversimplify a bit the new englander is basically a round barreled renegade and vice-versa.

The New Englander is lighter and shorter.  Easier carrying on a long trek.

I too recommend a .54 if you're going to get a new barrel for a Renegade.  The Green Mountain drop-in replacement barrel in .54 caliber, 1 in 70 twist is about as good as it gets.

I've got a few TC's.  I can carry my 50 cal, 15/16"  Hawken or Penn Hunter all day but my 1" Renegade gets heavy.  That being said, the Renegade in 54 or larger would be my pick with anything bigger than deer.  My 54 renegade does seem to kick a bit more even with the extra weight if thats a consideration.  Ive never shot a 50 cal renegade.

I've owned three my current one being a left hand .54. Just starting to shoot it and getting 1.5" groups at 50 yards with a .530 RB and 90 grains FFF. The other two a .50 and .54 right hand rifles have accounted for several Illinois whitetail over the years. I would definitly play around with that smooth bore and a roundball. As to the earlier comments about them being heavy I really have to disagree  ???. When a Classic Hawken style rifle will weigh 10.5 to 12 pounds and my other big gun has a 32"x 1- 1/8" barrel, that little Renegade is a joy to carry!

I have a Renegade that I put one of Green Mountain's 50 cal. carbine length bullet barrels on. It wears the old TC peep sights, and is a real shooter. Either Minie' bullets for the light stuff or a 600gr. paper patched solid if I really want penetration, it is a very useful rifle if a bit hard recoiling with the heavy bullets.

That said, if I had my choice and hadn't found the bullet barrel so cheap I'd probably get a 54 or 58 cal. GM ball twist barrel. Shooting balls is just so much easier to deal with and either would work well for hunting.

The regular factory barrels shoot round balls great.

I have a Renegade, the newer version with a single trigger, and have four barrels and three locks which all interchange on the one stock. The original .50 caliber T/C barrel was pretty badly pitted when I got it so I really haven't done much with that one. I also picked up a T/C .56 smoothbore barrel but haven't spent any time with that either because I fitted up a 20 gauge smoothbore 36" barrel to go with the flintlock. It gets most use with a Sharron .54 caliber percussion barrel and roundballs. The Renegade is really a versatile platform for extra barrels.
