Underlug engraving?

I have heard alot about the last numbers of the serial engraved on the barrel underlug.  Does anyone know when this was started?  Mine has no markings, but I bought new several years ago.   Serial starts with NH.

Don't know when it started, but not ALL have them. Seem's we are and have been at the mercy of the individual worker that installed that day.
Could have been early on a Monday or the last job on a Friday before quitin time  :P

All my underlugs are engraved except a 1988 model 45-70 that was stamped with the last 3 digits of the serial#.

Either they stopped in 93 for a while, or the theory about someone forgetting holds true...
