Peep sights on a new rifle
« on: April 30, 2011, 07:03:17 PM »
Hi, I just received a near new model 165 H&R serial #1318  that has a Redfield peep sight installed and a ramp and post front sight.  I understand how to adjust the sight, but dumb as it sounds I have no idea how to aim with it.  Do you position the top of the post on your intended impact point after centering it in the rear ring? With circle insert fronts it was easy, center them and shoot.  Your assistance is appreciated.  Also, any idea as to when manufactured? Thanks, Pete

Your eye will automaticlly put the top of the post in the center of the rear opening. How to hold the top of the post ( and adjust rear accordingly ) is up to you, and your useage.
If bullseye shooting, at a constant size bull, I think most shooters will adjust the rear sight so the top of the front post is right at the bottom of the bull ( lollipop ).That way a hold can be consistant, from shot to shot.
For hunting, with a post front, I think most folks will adjust sight so the bullet lands right on top of the post at the sight-in range. With a bead front sight, it would either be the same, or else sight-in so the bullet strikes the center of the bead, i.e., the bead covers the sight ( obviously best for close range ).

Thanks Mark!  Thats what I thought but just wasn't sure. Now to find out how good a group it will do from the bench.
